Ok this is the deal; I do NOT remember this book's title! Or the main character's names. I was a teenager-15 or so? I read an old romance novel of my mother's  that was left at my grandmother's house so she was in her twenties or so when she bought it-55 now. Anyway all I remember is that the story was about a woman and her fiancee and I believe one of them was a painter-I think her.

His mother didn't want ehr to amrry her son ebcasue she was poor and when there is aan accident and the girl is nearly killed, she gets paid off to go away but she thinks her fiance set it up so she goes after revenge. She changes her appearance through plastic surgery to get a new face since hers was crushed beyond repair and her hands as well. she learns to speak better through the help of the doctor? And  she essentially emerges with a new persona as a beautiful, cultured woman and goes after her ex who I believe thought she was dead.

The only other thing I remember is   the significance of a painter and one painting-a Wyeth painting that plays a role in the book.

It was a great book but my grandma threw it out so i'd love to find it again.

Thanks in advance for any help.

This sounds like The Promise by Danielle Steele but Michael was an architect not a painter. The heroine's name is Nancy and she and Michael are in a terrible car accident. His rich mother makes her a deal that she will pay to have the surgery done for Nancy if Nancy promises never to bother Michael again. I believe his mother convinced her Michael blamed her for the accident and didn't want to ever see her again also. Or he died. It has been so long ago since I read this book but it was one of my favorite books even though I typically don't care much for Danielle Steele.

I second The Promise. But it's been 25 years since I read it.

Your both right.  It is The Promise.  Also made into a movie.

I'm not 100% sure Jennifer, but I think I have a copy of this.  I'll check in my boxes of books that I keep to see if I still have it.

Yea! I actually knew one...whenever someone asks about a certain book I am the last one to know it. Mostly because, although, I have read many romance books I tend to stick with favorite authors and not branch out as much. But YEA!!!
