I posted a book that has about 41 wishing for it.  I keep getting the same RC saying "no excessive markings, folded pages or cover".  The cover is fine, and I know there are no markings, but I don't really want to flip through a couple hundred pages to see if there are any folded at all.  I'm guessing they want it to keep, maybe a collection or something.  It is a hardcover that I bought brand new last year.  I would hate to send them a book and not get credit because there may be a folded page.  I turned it down once saying that there may be folded pages, but then I got the same RC.  Should I turn it down again, or just hope they're not that picky?

I got a book about a week ago, but I just read it yesterday so I didn't mark it RWP because I didn't know.  There is a small tear on one of the pages in the middle of the book.  It's still readable.  You know them post card type things that sometimes come in the middle of a book?  It looks like when they pulled that out it ripped the page a little there.  Can i re-post this?

Any advice would be great!  Thanks in advance!

if you don't want to flip through the book to see if there are folded pages I would turn down that request.  They probably do want it for their keeper shelf and if there are 41 people on the list you should be passed along to someone else.

no idea about the other book, I know if the cover has a tear that is under 1" you can but would think probably not on the text pages but am sure someone that knows for sure.  or browse the help docs, lots of good info there!

I believe the 1" tear standard is for anywhere in the book. If the tear on the text page is less than an inch, I'd repost it.

eta: I hate to turn down RC, but I'd probably turn down one expecting me to find if any page was folded.

It seems to me that in the time it took you to write your post, you could have quickly flipped through the book to check for folded pages.

I think the question was more about why it keeps offering the book to the same person. I think if I did a quick flip through and didn't see a lot of folded corners, I would accept.  Unless you are one who dog ears pages.  You bought the book new so unless you folded the  pages, there probably aren't "excessive" folded corners.  But it's OK to decline if you don't want to take the risk.  You might be caught in a glitch and have to decline it a few times before it kicks it to the next person.  If it keeps happening, than I would contact PBS and see if they can get it to go to the next person.

Thanks for the help!

I am at work, and the book is at home so even if I wanted to flip through and check for folds instead of writing a post i can't.

<<I believe the 1" tear standard is for anywhere in the book.>>

This is not quite accurate.  Per the Help Center:

"Pages:

  • No torn or chewed/gnawed pages
    • yes, that does say "chewed/gnawed".  That means no pet-chewed (or human-chewed) books."

So, strictly speaking, the book with the torn page would not be postable, but you could offer it as a freebie, etc.

Cheers,

Catt

I don't really know how the freebie thing works

Ah, well, it can work in a variety of ways.  Check out Leslie's and Mary's posts above -- they have some freebies offered in their signatures, where folks can choose a damaged/unpostable book for free when ordering something from their shelf.

There is also a thread in the Book Bazaar where you can post damaged books which you are willing to send for free -- no strings attached, no "order from my shelf" needed.  http://www.paperbackswap.com/forum/topic.php?t=2441

Other folks do other things -- post lists of freebies in their profiles, etc.  You can, of course, do whatever you want with it -- give it to charity, burn it, whatever ... "freebies" are just a common use of unpostable items here at PBS.

Cheers,

Catt
