I've never used an RC before, but I'm looking for specific conditions for a certain author that's OOP as a gift to my DH. Does my RC sound reasonable?

"This RC is only applicable to Charlotte Prentiss Novels. Please ignore this RC for any other author.

I'm looking for Charlotte Prentiss novels in giftable/gently used condition. I understand that these are older books and shelf-wear is expected, so I'm looking for above average books with no second hand stamps/writing, bent spines/dogears, or ripped/cut covers. Please PM Karistan if you have any questions. Thank you very much! :)"

Any suggestions will be very helpful! :)

Here is what I would suggest: don't turn on the RC until you have one of these books posted to you.  Even though it may seem to you and me that your condition is VERY clear that the conditions only apply to certain books, there is a good chance that you will miss out on other books if you have your condition turned on.  I have learned this the hard way- see my thread titled "This is getting almost humorous" for my story.  I already lost out on one book that has been on my WL for months because someone obviously didn't read my condition very carefully.  Just turn off your RC and make sure that these books are NOT on auto-request- that way, you will have to confirm that you want to order the books before they are ordered, and you can turn on the RC at that time.

Good luck!

I agree about not turning them on unless relevant to the offer, some people ruin the system unfortunately by not even reading them.  Other than that, it seems concise and polite.  :)

Please PM Karistan if you have any questions.

Per the Help Center, you are not supposed to request PM's in your RCs.  From: How to Use Requestor Conditions

Your Requestor Conditions should NOT ask the sender to "PM me if you are unsure"

  • There is no mechanism for the sender to PM the requestor from a request without accepting it

The other thing that people, in general, need to remember is that no one is required to accept any RCs.  Even if the book posted meets the RCs, the sending member is not required to accept.  It is certainly accurate that some members do not seem to read very carefully, or are easily confused.  This can be very frustrating.  However, just as any member has the right to have RCs, any other member had the right to decline to deal with them.

The advice to use the RCs only when offered one of these books is excellent, it will save you frustration on getting declined books (and you will) that have nothing to do with your request.

Turn if off when requesting books this doesn't apply to because you will get turn downs.  Some people auto turn down any and all RCs.  Some people will see the "pm if you have any questions-and decline"  others will see the book series you mentioned and w/o reading the rest decline because it's not the series they posted.  I decline any that ask for a PM about a book even if the name is in the RC.  Either my book meets your RCS or it doesn't.

One - Waht everyone else said. Sadly it seems people are always in here with frustration over getting turned down books simply for having an RC.

Two - I would suggest you remove any and all words that can be left to interpretation. I would turn down any request I felt was left to interpretation because what I think is "gently used" may be different to what you think is "gently used". It sounds like a transaction that could go wrong.

I would remove the bold words -

  • "I'm looking for Charlotte Prentiss novels in giftable/gently used condition. I understand that these are older books and shelf-wear is expected, so I'm looking for above average books with no second hand stamps/writing, bent spines/dogears, or ripped/cut covers. Please PM Karistan if you have any questions. Thank you very much!"  - Tina

And the underlined because it is impossible anyway. Instead just keep it to the specifics. I say this because I would consider a book with "dog ears" both, gently used and giftable. The same with initials in the cover or some such, if the book was strongly desired. For instance. My man friend (partener, whatever) wants the book I am requesting in my siggy, he wants it pretty badly, so I don't care if it is unpostable. That is something I would (and hope to) gift.

Good luck!
