I'm looking for a story I read years ago, but can't remember the title or author. Maybe someone here will remember.

The plot goes like this:

A scientist creates a world/universe of miniature people. He observes them from above using a microscope and manipulates them from time to time, playing god.

In the end, he looks up and sees another eye looking down on him, indicating that he is also inside an experiment, and from there, many more in a sort of recursive theme, one world looking down on another, then another, etc. A "who made who" theme if you will.

I thought at first it was a Twilight Zone episode, but a look through the episode summaries on wikipedia didn't find anything.

Any thoughts?

Not a story, but that's almost the exact plot of a movie called The 13th Floor, and it wouldn't surprise me to hear it was based on the story you're tlking about.

OK, I looked up the movie, and it is indeed based on a book called Simulacron-3 by Daniel F. Galouye, published in 1964...does that sound like it?

I read simulacron 13, the plot is similiar, but the peolple are computer simulations, and there are only the two levels of reality.

I still haven't found the right one. Don't you hate it when that happens? It's right there, just under the surface of memory but won't come up? Lost in the jumble of the thousands of other stories in my head :)

Found a close one, but still not it.

Thanks for the replies!

I've read that one too.  For some reason I keep thinking the scientist is in NJ.  I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it though.  I do know it's not ifth of oofth by walter tevis although that has an eye in the sky  too.   (it's online somewhere)

I remember this one also.  But I have never read Galouye.  I remember thinking that The 13th Floor was so similiar to an earlier story.  Could it be a short story?  Or The Outer Limits?

And didn't the movie Men in Black end with an image like this, but with aliens?

I recall a short story from my youth (a LONG time ago) in which a scientist had created a world of miniature beings.  They lived much faster than we do, and the scientist used them to make scientific breakthrouhs - usually by terrorizing them.  Story ended with the scientist's lab protected by a force shield (that he forced the little beings to develp by threating to crush them) and the world wondering what would happen when he died and the litle people broke free.
