Subject: Help me reword my RC, please?

Today I had a WL book rejected because my RC says "I would like if hardcovers came with their dust jackets, please. Thanks!". The member rejected the WL auto-request because the book was a softcover (which I knew and wanted). Since my RC wasn't turned off for that request, I guess they thought I meant that I wanted only hardcovers... :(

I thought my RC was pretty clear and very simple in that it pertained solely to hardcover books. Please help... how can I reword my RC in even more simple, polite language so that this doesn't happen again?

I appreciate it! :)

Maybe something like,
"If this book is a paperback, please send it.  If it's a hardcover, and it doesn't have a dust jacket, please cancel this request.  Thanks!"

Maybe something like,

If this book is a hardcover please include dust jacket

If this book is a softcover (or paperback) this condition does not apply.

Here's my RC, feel free to use it:

If this request is for a paperback book:  Thank-you for posting this, I have no special conditions for paperbacks.

If this request is for a Hardback book:  I prefer that the book include the dust jacket as these are for my home library.  Thanks!

That's perfect, thank you!

My brain was seriously drained and I couldn't think of a single thing. :)

I like Melissa's wording but I'd exclude the word "prefer".  If you prefer something that means that while you'd LIKE it to have a dust cover, you are ok if it doesn't.  JMO

Here's mine:

If this is a request for a book listed as a paperback please send it, I can't wait to read it! If it is a request for a 2000 or newer Hard Cover, please include the dustjacket. If it is older, dustjacket is not required, it will just be a nice bonus if it has one :)

I've only had one confused paperback poster and she accepted and PMed me.

I would think twice about saying that the book is for your home library. Some poeple get offended at the thought that you would be keeping the book and not swapping it again. (not me, I don't care what you do with your books) ... but some people get all upset at the thought of "book collectors" collecting books from PBS.

I would just leave it at "If this request is for a Hardback book:  Please include the dust jacket. Thanks "

and don't forget that some people automatically deny all RC's and that may have been the case here.

Another way to go is to only turn on your RC for books that you know to be hardcovers (with covers). That would minimize your exposure to the all-RC-deniers.

That's a really good point, the reason given was "the book is softcover, sorry!" so I think it wasn't automatically rejected... I hope not at least. RC's seem like such a tricky thing, I can understand turning someone down definitely if your book didn't meet the conditions, or if the conditions seemed a little too finicky or like a grey area, but some of them are so easy to comply with. Oh well.

Sophia-- very good thing to keep in mind, but I'm not sure that you can turn off your RC for auto-requested WL books (which was the case here). I don't know though...

I really do appreciate all of this input. Thank you all!

I have the same RC, and this is how I word it:

"If your book is a paperback or a book that was published without a dustjacket, please send it.  I don't have any conditions on them. If your book is a hardcover that originally came with a dustcover, I prefer it to have the dustcover - they look naked without. :)"

Many PBS members get confused very easily. You are bound to run into these eventually. I think this is what happened here.

Here's my version:

For Paperback book requests: No requestor conditions, please send.

For Hardback book requests: Please include the original dust jacket.

Even this version is not fool proof. No RC is foolproof though.

I have re-worded my RC many times and finally ended up with this:

If this is a paperback book or an audio book, please send it!

If this is a HARDBACK BOOK, I would like to have the dustcover for it .......if the book is supposed to have a dustcover.  Some hardback books have the title/artwork directly on the cover and, therefore, do not come with a dustcover.  Thanks so much for your consideration!

Even so, there are still members who either don't fully read the RC or they misinterpret it.  I added that about the title/artwork printed directly on a book's cover after I missed getting a book that was NOT supposed to have a dust cover.

and the honest truth is, no matter how carefully you word it...there is a small contingent that will still misunderstand.  I went through this for a while with audiobooks and wanting only unabridged versions.  You have some great s uggestions here, though. :-)
