Try Lynne Cherry's " A River Ran Wild".  It is the ecological study of a river in CT.  Her books are excellent with lots of illustrations.

Is there a Project Wet in your area? I know that schools across the country get involved with the program and I would think that they'd be willing to work with homeschooling parents as well.  Years ago I had a friend who ran a Project Wet and Project Wild program in Michigan and I know she would have gladly accepted homeschoolers as well as traditional schools.
