I have a question. It's about a historical fiction book I have just discovered quite by accident. It is called: The Wicked Lady. Actually, it a has two different titles as it's been around since 1946. Here is the cool cover: http://www.paperbackswap.com/Wicked-Lady-Magdalen-King-Hall/book/0140067795/. There are other looks and titles. Some are just The Wicked Lady and some are The Life and Death of... blah blah. You get the picture. There is ONE copy of this book posted here on pbs, but... well, what the heck does it look like? It's paperback, 1946, and I want to know what it looks like. I know that sounds lame, but really, I prefer the cooler covers. I know it makes no difference towards book content, but if it's an ugly cover, it's gonna sit on my shelf forever. I won't lie. I won't be motivated to pick it up. LOL

So.. how do I pm the member and ask?? Is there any way to do this? I want to know what it looks like before I order it. :p

I just googled the publisher and year and keep getting an ugly blue hardback so I don't want that. Bleh. I am not sure what to think. It says paperback, but.. hm.

Well, lack of cover images is a hot topic elsewhere.. I commented before I read the entire thread.. seems a huge debate. Most people say, "Don't judge a book by its cover.. what does it matter??" Well, I'm guilty. If it has an interesting cover, I'm more likely to not just forget about it and toss it in the closet. LOL. I can't get any information on that book so I just won't request it.

Tara, the only way for you to find out before you order is to put a Requester Condition on your request asking for the person to PM you before accepting the order.  You have to include your username in the PM or they will have no way to contact you.  Keep in mind that a lot of people will just decline requests like that because they don't want to hassle with it, but if the book has been sitting on the person's shelf for a while, they might respond.

I went ahead and ordered the book, but I pm'd the person as well and asked them about  it. I don't want a hardcover. Not crazy about hardcovers. If there's tons of paperbacks out, I would rather get a pb, but the person has a pb listed.. However, no amount of googling pulls up a paperback in 1946.. only a hardback. Hopefully, the person responds.

Well, that didn't go well. I'm now getting an ugly old hardcover without a dust jacket and the option to cancel disappeared as soon as I got that information. (Banging head on keyboard.)

SO.....when the book arrives, if it is a hardcover, but the PBS listing said paperback, you can mark it "Received with a Problem" and request that the sender return your credit.  Book type (hardcover vs. paperback) is one of the required things that HAS to match in a book posting.  You lost the option to cancel when the sender printed the label.  If you want to be really proactive, you could PM the sender and tell them that if the book type that you receive does not match the PBS listing, you intend to mark it RWAP and request your credit be returned.  If they haven't actually mailed it yet, maybe they will cancel it themselves.

Thanks, Jerelyn! LOL I hadn't even thought to post it here. :)

Christa, I did pm the member about it, not about doing that, but about trying to cancel the whole thing before she mails it, but no response yet. It was listed as paperback, it was a member created listing I'm told so I don't know how or why that error happened. I don't want to put any bad marks on anyone though. I will just accept the hardback if it can't be canceled. A book is a book. An ugly book, but a book. It's just a pet peeve of mine, plain,  ugly hardcovers. They don't "call to me." LOL

Tara you can't come in and, hock your books it isn't allowed according to club rules.  But I can tell the members about it because it isn't my book and I am not your agent, editor, or publisher. Just your friend :)

Plus I love your cover.

Also about the book you ordered your not going to give them a black mark, they really want people to take care how they post, for this very reason.  If it's listed as a paperback it should be and vice versa.  I would hate to order say a hard bound keeper copy of something and get a paperback that I might already have.

Jerelyn's right, it is important to list your book correctly. I've had times when I specifically wanted a HB and not a MMPB, as in Wheel of Fortune. I could have got the MMPB from the library, but I don't want to read a 1,000 + page book in that format. My hands couldn't take it. Similarly, this book came out in one of the book club issues as a two book HB. That wouldn't have been a problem, but some folks listed each book separately (which I assume is the correct way to do it) and I didn't want to blow two points when I could have it for one.
