I requested a book earlier today and just received an email saying my request had been declined, with this message from the poster:

"Don't want to go to the expense of sending this book"

Okay, whatever. I don't understand why anyone would list a book that they don't intend to send out, but I guess that's their prerogative. My question is this: what happens if another member posts the book in the system? I would still like to get this book if it becomes available from another member, but won't my request automatically go to the first poster (who declined the request) every time I try to request this book?

Aimee,

When they canceled the request, the book was removed from their shelf.  If it is a wish list book, you should have been put back at #1 and will get offered the next copy posted.

They must be very new and not know how to put their bookshelf on hold when they don't have money for postage ; or they never mail a book. I wonder which one it is.

I think the way they declined it is going to make that a problem. When I go to request the book again (it's still in the system):

"All available copies of this book have been previously requested by you and the sender(s) have stated that they do not meet your Requestor Conditions. You should only try to order again if you have since changed your Requestor Conditions"

My RC only have to do with hardback books, and this is a PB book. I went ahead and requested it again (with no RC), although the poster said her reason for declining was the shipping expense. Hopefully if it is declined this time without my RC, what you said will happen and I'll go back to the top of the WL for another copy being posted in the future.

Thank you!

They've got books on their shelf that were posted in 2009, so I'm thinking maybe it's just not knowing how to put their shelf on hold.

What do they mean don't want to go through the expense?  Do they mean they don't want to pay postage?  If that's the case, they violated the TOU of the site.  If they post a book, they need to send it (barring any RCs).  I would send a message to TPTB if that is what they meant.  That's uncalled for.

I re-requested the first book (as well as an additional book from their shelf) with no RC this time, so we'll see how that goes.

Refusing to send a book is a big red flag.  Report it if they pull that again.   Heck, report it anyway.  They can remove books from their shelf if they do not want to mail them.  Misusing the RC form to refuse?  Oh boy.  That's just so wrong.  And it sounded like they were refusing as you ordered just one book.

My thoughts exactly.  Now that you've ordered two, I'm curious to know the member's response.  Do share!  LOL

I ended up submitting it to the PBS team to handle, and cancelled my order with that particular member. Still not sure what their reasoning was (or whether they would've been fine with the expense once they were getting 2 credits from me instead of 1), but I'd rather just avoid dealing with that whole situation. The book is no longer in the system, but I added it back to my wishlist in hopes of a future swap. Thanks for the information and advice, everyone! :)

"Don't want to go to the expense of sending this book", sounds like a response to someone's RC who they feel they may receive a RWAP on.

Wow!  Why belong to PBS if you are not willing to go to the expense of mailing a book??
If a person truly couldn't afford postage for awhile they could just put their account on hold.
