Hemi A Mule Author:Barbara Brenner TO BEGIN WITH — When Mare and Jackass mated, anyone around the barnyard could have told you what was going to happen. And it did. Ten and a half months later, Mare gave birth to a fine baby mule. — Both parents were delighted. They decided to name the foal Hemionus, which is the Greek name for mule and means half-ass. They felt that giving him an ... more »ancient name would help him grow up with a sense of his own history. "After all," Jackass observed proudly, "the breeding of mules is at least three thousand years old."
The other animals agreed that not only was Hemionus a good name for a mule, but that Hemi was as fine an example of his breed as had ever been born around those parts. There was only one unpleasant note struck on that happy occasion. Hen was overheard to remark that it was her opinion that mules were obsolete. But since no one knew exactly what obsolete was, they paid no attention to her and the moment passed.
