I don't have a very high opinion of Churchill; he has always seemed more flash and carefully crafted image than substance. This book, although fairly well written, did nothing to change my view. The rather sparse tale of Churchill's capture and escape had to be padded out to book length by less interesting and less relevant material, and anyone wanting to learn anything important about either the man or the Boer War would do better elsewhere.
