It's fall in the Sierra Mountains, and Anna Pigeon is slinging hash in Yosemite National Park's historic Ahwahnee Hotel. Four young people, all seasonal park employees, have disappeared, and two weeks of work by crack search-and-rescue teams have failed to turn up a single clue; investigators are unsure as to whether the four went AWOL for reasons of their own-or died in the park. Needing an out-of-park ranger to work undercover, Anna is detailed to dining-room duty; but after a week of waiting tables, she knows the missing employees are only the first indications of a sickness threatening the park.
Her twenty-something roommates give up their party-girl ways and panic; her new restaurant colleagues regard her with suspicion and fear. But when Anna's life is threatened and her temporary supervisor turns a deaf ear, she follows the scent of evil, taking a solo hike up a snowy trial to the high country, seeking answers. What waits for her is a nightmare of death and greed-and perhaps her final adventure.
The author Nevada Barr was recently a forest ranger on the Natchez Trail Parkway. By profession the author is a forest ranger who served in many of our national parks.
This a cliffhanger mystery. Four young people in the park disappear without a trace. Anna Pigeon has to thankless job of finding them. Anna's life is in peril but she seeks the perpetraors of this crime. Will she live or die? Read this book and find out.
Nevada Barr is entertaining. Her stories are sometimes a little over the top of believeability. As someone who lives at the entrance to and spends a great deal of time in one of the National Parks that she hasn't written about, I,m waiting for that book to be written. I've read about 10 of her books, which should say sometime about my reaction to her writings.
Female protagonist who has a heart of gold and a smart aleck tongue! I am came by this series late to the game and started mid series but it's been wonderful. This is the third book of Nevada Barr I have read and I regret I didn't start years ago on her series. As she writes only about a book a year and I read a book or two a week I should catch up in no time.
Anna Pigeon is the lead, she is a park ranger for the National Park Service and she is a widow.
She comes by mysterious circumstances thru her job as a ranger which in case you don't know is the police force for the park but with extra duties thrown in. For example they enforce park rules, investigate crimes, give directions and assistance to visitors, provide passes or permission to certain specialties activities like hiking a mountain or diving to a wreck or fishing.
She loves the outdoors without being gung ho exercise freak or environmental extraordinaire, were you read and gradually feel bad about yourself for not driving a hybrid and exercising 2 hrs a day. Another thing I love is the narrator Barbara Rosenblat, marvelous, extraordinary, terrific and perfect. Love all the books she has narrated even when I didn't like the books! ð
First let me say that I enjoy anything Barbara Rosenblat narrates. She's the best of the best! Second, the book was a great listen: interesting, fluid plot kept me interested all the way through. A super story.
Anna Pidgeon, national park ranger, finds herself undercover at Yosemite National Park, CA, to investigate the disappeance of 4 young employees. A page turner, Nevada Barr is on my favorite list. Don't miss any of the Anna P. series.
Excellent writing as always by Nevada Barr, but more consistently violent than the earlier books in this series. Anna goes under cover in Yosemite after four young park employees disappear. I generally don't like descriptive writing, but Barr does a masterful job of giving us the feel for the natural features of the national park with a light hand.
Another great Nevada Barr murder mystery. Anna Pigeon goes undercover in Yosemite National Park to try to help find/track down four hikers who have gone missing. As Anna works as a waitress in her undercover persona, she is able to pick up enough tidbits here and there to lead her out on a solo hike, which only leads to trouble for her. Using her backwoods skills and determination, she manages to find out what's really going on and stay alive...just barely. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout to keep the reader very interested and continuely guessing...up to the very end. Anna is a strong, independant hero who is in her late 40s, early 50s, and a breath of fresh air to the stale young, always pretty, and usually blond and not-too-bright heros other authers use. I enjoy reading about her adventures, as well as the various national parks she visits. Nevada Barr doesn't goop up her storylines with unnecessary romance, adds just enough action and realism to make the reader believe, and usually surprises the reader up to the very end. Highly recommend.
