Returning to Mitford has become addictive as I pick up the next book to find out what happens next with the residents of the small town. This book should have come with a tissue box--as I read on about developments in the lives of characters I've been following for three books, I couldn't help but be drawn into the events.

In this book, the author does not neglect to keep the reader up-to-date on familiar characters. However, the addition of new characters kept the material fresh and interesting. These books make a comfortable and relaxing read.

This is book 3 of the Mitford Years. I loved this entire series and I'm usually more of a mystery lover. Father Tim is still one of my favorite characters. It is fun and inspiring to get to know him and the townspeople.

this cover is a pale pinkish brown not purple like the picture the ISBN matches.
This third in the Mitford series (At Home in Mitford)is another sympathetic portrayal of small-town Southern life with just enough drama to carry the plot and gracefully developed portraits of endearing characters.

I want to throw my two cents in with the millions of readers who love these books. I want to live in Mitford, NC! (I wish) I loved every character and didn't want it to ever end. When my mom first recommended this, I was unsure. And, even after reading the first few chapters, still not 100% sold. I thought, "this is TOO sweet", but then BAM! I was hooked and never looked back. I don't know exactly what threw the switch for me, but I'd recommend this author to ANYBODY. I can't say enough good things.

From back of book:

Add a life changing camping trip, the arrival of the town's first policewoman, and a new computer that requires the patience of a saint, and you know you're in for another engrossing visit to Mitford -- the little town that readers everywhere love to call home.

I think that this was a little different than the previous books. It tended to drag in places and run long in others but the characters are extremely likeable and I did go on to read the next one.

OK, on first glance I thought, "A book about a preacher???" But it was great. The characters are so well drawn they pop off the page. It may be told from the preacher's point of view but really it's a book about a town that is more like a family.

Of course, I loved this book but my only complaint is that the author wrote this out of order. The next book in the series should have been their wedding not years after the wedding! Father Tim does learn an important lesson about himself when he and Cynthia get stuck in a cave that changes his life and outlook on life.

#3 of the Mitford series. The book right after Father Tim, a minister, and his next door neighbor, Cynthia get married. Full of amusing stories about combining households, Miss Sadie, the arrival of a computer in the church office, and dealing with Dooley, his adopted teenage son . . . While it is in the middle of a series, you can still read it and enjoy without having read the others.

In These High, Green Hills we're once again in Mitford, a southern village of local characters so heartwarming and hilarious you'll wish you lived right next door.
At last, Mitford's rector and lifelong bachelor, Father Tim, has married his talented and vivacious neighbor, Cynthia. Now, of course, they must face love's challenges: new sleeping arrangements for Father Tim's sofa-sized dog, Cynthia's urge to decorate the rectory Italian-villa-syle, and the growing pains of the thrown-away boy who's become like a son to rector.
Add a life-changing camping trip, the arrival of the town's first policewoman, and a new computer that requires the patience of a saint, and you know you're in for another engrossing visit to Mitford.

Another wonderful story (actually No. 3) in Jan Karon's Mitford Series.

Father Tim is fulfilling Cynthia's conviction that deep down he is a man of panache and daring. His life has taken a radical new course, but he is still married to Mitford--infuriating and lovable as it is.

Curl up with a cup of tea to listen to Jan Karon's lovely voice bring the characters to life! As usual, a great read or listen, as the case may be!

For years, Mitford's sixty something rector has been happily married to his parish. Now he's also married to Cynthia, his vivacious next-door neighbor. For Father Tim, life in Mitford has never been so full of surprises. His wife is "aging" his already ancient kitchen walls, not to mention burning his draperies. The mountain boy he's learned to love as his own makes a heartrending decision. And the agony of mastering the church computer system is as boggling as the pandemonium that breaks loose when his quiet rectory becomes a nursery. All this, however, is small potatoes compared to what happens on a wilderness camping trip that sends him home a changed man.

In These High, Green Hills, Jan Karon takes you on a heartwarming and hilarious visit to Mitford, where her lovable characters always inspire laughter, tears, and fresh hope. «

Jan Karon has created a town where we feel wonderfully at home. In Mitford, a village nestled in the hills of North Carolina, she shows us small-town life for what it really is: completely engrossing. And absolutely hilarious. In this irresistible third book of The Mitford Years series, Father Timothy Kavanagh is married to more than his lovable and eccentric Episcopal parishioners. He's also married to Cynthia, his vivacious and talented neighbor. Suddenly, the routine existence of a sixtysomething bachelor is out the window. How will they keep his sofa-sized dog at a safe distance from her arrogant, albeit famous, cat? Can he learn to love the old-Italian-villa look his wife is bent on giving the rectory? These concerns pale, however, beside the growing pains of Dooley Barlowe, the thrown-away boy whom the rector loves as his own son. Then, the poverty and violence of an area known as the Creek comes knocking at the rectory door. Clearly, being at home in Mitford has its challenges. And, when the rector goes on a camping trip with the church youth group, he's forced to confront the toughest challenge of all - his own fears.
