Is anyone else having trouble actuallly GETTING the books they order here lately? I am beyond frustrated, to the point I rarely order here anymore, unless WL or from someone I have dealt with before.

I would have to look at archive for exact number, but I think I am heading towards 10-15 "lost" in past 2 months!

Prior to this little oddity, I had exactly one go lost on me since becoming a member. (I am talking about books I am requesting, not sending, just to clarify.)

The most disappointing and irritating factor in this is that all the ones lost have used DC. But beyond them printing the postage, the postal service NEVER shows ANY signs that these items have EVER been shipped.

I even got to the point where I am fed up enough that I pm'd the most recent one (about to go lost next week, WL book I have been waiting on to complete a series) and asked her if she actually mailed the book. I was polite, it wasnt as rude as I just sounded (honest I swear, lol). She replied with "Yup absolutely, but my books NEVER show any signs along the way, they just arrive at their destination". Well in my case I can say this is CRAP. I have ordered more than 650 books since starting here, my post office has scanned EVERY one of them along route. I am NOT saying that all postal services will scan, at each destination, but this seemed more than just a strange statement. Every book she has ever sent has NEVER been scanned along the way with the DC? Hmmmm..

Sorry this is so long. I am just SO fed up! ONE of the ones that went "lost" showed up last week. The shipping date was a month and a half PAST the time it was supposed to be shipped!!

And I wont even go into the unpostables...

WHAT is going on??!!

I have gotten so fed up I have started ordering my books online, vs ordering here, and have freecycled over 300 off my personal bookshelf this past week (alot of WL too!) rather than trade anymore. Enough already.

Signed,

A more than frustrated, about to be EX member.

That estimate seems too high for it to be just bad luck.  Not sure what is going on though. If the senders are using PBS DC, can't you look at the "track this book" feature to see what's going on?

That is a really high number.  Is it possible that there's something going on at your PO?

I have tracked the books, taken the DC to usps website too. They never show receipt of the books.

That is what is driving me crazy. I am just tired. I would rather buy them new at this point. I ordered a few for my son, for gifts for his birthday. Those were a group of the ones that never ever showed any signs of post office receiving the actual package, just the electronic shipping info. That order was in September... Still no books. I went ahead and bought them at Walmart. Had no choice. But in mean time, my credits sat in limbo waiting.

Its really not worth it anymore. Not like this. I have ordered two in recent month. Two! Down from my usual 50 plus a month. lol. Been buying them new instead. But of those TWO books, one is about to go missing. Other I received today. Thank Goodness, it was getting me nervous thought they were BOTH going to go lost and about to make me cry.

Anyways, whatever it is, getting credit with quick credit and not shipping books, some "odd fluke: with their post office as the one about to go lost claims.. Whatever, I think I have reached my limit. Time to move on.

Sorry I just sat here and vented and roared. I know MOST members are awesome traders and great all around. But this small group has made this member say enough, not worth it anymore. When the fun is gone in this, there is no point in staying.

I am going to send message to site tonight and ask them to close my account.

Take care everyone. And Happy Holidays.

This is example one, but if I go into transaction archive all the ones mentioned that went lost come up the same way, even now, two months after supposedly shipped..

If no one else is having this kind of luck, then I'd be tempted to say that it's something at your P.O.  The odds of 10-15 random members not sending books out at all is not going to be as likely as you having a bottleneck, or maybe even a thief, in the P.O. snapping them as they come by.

When one goes lost, have you been filling out the USPS form for lost mail? It may not get any of your lost books back, but it'll at least let the P.O. know that something is happening in your area, and maybe they can do some digging. That's how they found out one P.O. employee was stealing Netflix DVD's as they came through his area. The stats were way out of wack for lost Netflix, and they traced the missing ones as having gone through his P.O. and then never making it out.

The form is at...

https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/mlntrcvd.aspx

and says "Mail Theft" but you can use if for lost mail as well.

I filed on the first two that went lost. I havent bothered since. Postal service shows same thing as I do on them, that they dont even have receipt of them ever being shipped. Have not heard anything since on those two.

The rest I just kind of sigh, and hope the WL moves again fairly quickly on them. I dont have a problem with my post office on anything from anywhere else though I can say that. I have been receiving, on average, about 25-30 packages a week from online stores, Ebay, books stores, etc (did all Christmas shopping online) and havent had a single thing go missing or anything. And not all have been shipped with any dc or anything. Only place I am having a problem with is here. That is why I question.

On the one set for my son, I pm'd the person, never received any kind of response to date.

I dont know what to think. Just honestly, dont think it's worth the aggravation anymore. I used to love this site, still love the people, forums, etc.But the fun, the enjoyment, is gone in too many ways to make it worth it anymore. It is what it is I guess.

I've had 3 or so go lost but they didn't have DC...they never arrived.  I think that with the site growing there may be people who sign up and never come back.  Just a theroy I have started to believe.  Maybe that explains the unpostables I get too.

I am one of those members who buy the instant DC and postage.  And my sonmails them at the Big Blue box.  Consequently it never gets scanned until like 5+ days later.  Also I've noticed that my books no longer go to Richmond (VA) but go to NC as a distribution hub.  It really bothers me that these books don't get scanned sooner - if ever.  I feel very defensive about it since it looks like I'm not mailing them.  I'm not sure why this is happening to you, but I would certainly question the local PO about it.  I certainly hope it doesn't spread(like a virus).

Cindy....wouldn't that be more applicable if it were the books Misty was shipping that were disappearing as opposed to books from all over the country not being scanned on the way to her? If they had been mailed, it would seem they'd at least be scanned at a sort center along the way somewhere. On the other hand, if you've paid for the postage and d/c, what sense would there be in not mailing the package? It's a confusing and frustrating situation.

I have one about to go lost too. It could be the same person who never mailed the books. The book was marked mailed a minute after the wrapper was printed. The sender doesn't get a credit until the book gets scanned by USPS.

I would definitely investigate at your post office.  A post office near where I live had a problem recently with a temporary employee stealing Netflix movies.  Netflix informed the PO about the large number of "missing" movies that seemed to go missing somewhere before landing at that post office.  They set up a sting and caught the guy.  Same thing could be happening with your books.

But Rebecca that only applies if they use QC, if they use postage from site (instant credit) they receive credit the second they mark it mailed.

Thanks guys. I am thoroughly confused as to why this is happening. I will note that all the books I send out through PO (and occasionally Blue box) have gotten to destinations. Im not saying this couldnt be my po, but they never even show in route from anywhere.. I feel like I am wasting my time filing these, cause the post office never shows they even received the packages..

But I wlll head up to po Monday I think and talk to postmaster, see if he can help me out any. Just so aggravating! It shouldnt be, I know, its just books. But grrr.

Anyways, thanks for other possible options to consider. Got so frustrated it just felt like the only option would be they arent actually mailing. And they got their credit even if they didnt actually mail it! oh well.

And please dont think I am complaining about those who the po just doesnt scan until a week later or whatever, I dont mind those in the least. The one that DID arrive, with a postmark of a month plus the supposed mailing date, that one irritated the crud out of me though. A pm that they were mailing late, SOMETHING, would have been nice. Oh well.

I think I have complained enough for one day. lol. Taking my grumpy butt and removing it from the computer. Goodnight.

Take care

I wouldn't think it would be cost effective to pay for PBS postage, plus the postage fee just to get a credit.  You can buy credits for $2.50 in the book bazaar.

Misty, I would let PBS know that you are having a problem and you are visiting the local PO to investigate.  Maybe they will have some additional advice go give prior to your visit.

I just had one book that will be marked lost next week.  I notified the sender that I have not received the book, vs not marking it received.  She just pm'd me that she has sent it 3 times and it has been returned 3 times.  She is not using quick credit or PBS postage.   So either her PO is messing up or she didn't send it.  Not sure which, but I haven't had any other issues.

Haven't noticed a higher number of lost books lately...unfortunately the type of books I wishlist move very slowly & only one or two a month are fulfilled FIFO.  Have you tried running any of the DC numbers through USPS.com?  Sometimes they have different information available.

It's interesting that so many of your missing books have used DC, but show no scans.  Although the scan situation varies alot depending on shipping point, and receiving location, I have legitimatly received a few DC books that have not been scanned enroute...out of hundreds of transactions, I can count them on one hand.   But the number you are experiencing seems odd to me also.  In this situation, PBS admin may be the best place to start for suggestions.

Good luck!

I've heard of mailmen who just set aside the media mail if the route bag is too full.  (Which they can legally do.)  We had a sub who didn't deliver any of the media mail.  Got five books the day the regular carrier came back.  Asking the supervisor will often nudge those books out of hiding.

Also check where the books are coming from.  Overseas like AK, HI, PR, GU and APO always take longer.

Be sure to mark in the survey if the mail date is late.  If it is a habit, PBS will contact them.

No, because she's having books coming to her go lost, not just arriving unscanned. They're not arriving at all. So if they've been mailed they're disapearing somewhere along the way.  The OP having 10-15 books go lost in a couple of months is a huge number, and the common denominator from 10-15 different, random senders would be her address.

Not having them scanned is not unusual from what I can tell. The P.O. isn't required to scan them at all if the books are dropped in a box with the extra postage. They may never get scanned at all, or scanned as delivered when they haven't been. The P.O. uses DC as 'Delivery Confirmation', and not as 'Tracking', so if things get busy I don't think it gets done at all along the way in a lot of cases.

But to have that many go missing is a huge red flag. And what ever happened to them the P.O. can't see a pattern and investigate if they don't know it's happening. They can't fix what they don't know is broke.

I have read in the forum about a few people in the past month or two noticing that their DC books were never scanned once, and coming from different states.  But there was no issue of the books going lost, just that they weren't scanned.

Please let us know what you hear from the Post Office, and what the PBS admin team says.  We're behind you on this, Misty!

She's closed her account.  She sent out a PM last night to her buddy list (I'm on it) and said she was leaving PBS.  It shows that it's closed now.

That is unfortunate.  I wished she gave PBS a chance to help her with this issue.

She's been threatening to leave for a while.  She gave me a deal off her shelf a few months ago saying she wanted to clear it off before leaving PBS.
