Kit Roarke travels to the tiny town of Pratte, Vermont to track down her best friend's killer. As she delves into the sordid lives of these small-town citizens, it becomes clear that her friend Joanne, a reporter, was poisoned because of a story she was working on, the story of a long ago love triangle that ended in a double murder. Kit also knows that Joanne had met a man, a man Joanne knew she wouldn't approve of.
