When someone like Donna recommends a historical I put it on my TBR.  Just finished Valiant Ambition by Nathaniel Philbrick and it's great.  Of course, I've read several books by this author and enjoyed every one.  And, in this one, I learned so much about the war between the colonies and Britian.  The politics, the backbiting, the strengths and weaknesses of the stuggle, the officers and the infant government is unbelievable. Philbrick makes reading history so enjoyable.

Thanks, R E K. I do the same with the books you recommend, as I find we have very similar tastes. I'm glad you liked Valiant Ambition.

Just finished Flight of Dreams by Ariel Lawhon and wow! what a book! I didn't write a detailed review but this is what I did write about this terrific read:

One of the best reads ever!

I have to say that this was an excellent book! The writing was superb and the descriptions of the airship, characters and the time period were so realistic that you felt as if you were right there. It was uplifting and heart wrenching. How this author was able to combine actual history of people and events with her own brand of fiction really shows her talent. I'm giving it 5 stars.

Jeanne, I gave Flight of Dreams 5 stars also. One of my favorite books of the year!

I just read Mata Hari's Last Dance by Michelle Moran. I thought it was quite interesting but very short (about 250 pages).

Read Blood Red Roses by Margaret Lawrence, my first book by this author and it was very good.  I give it 4.5 stars, good for the HF challenge or the HF mystery/thriller challenge.  Takes place in the 1780s with a midwife widow as the key character.  Her missing husband shows up but is murdered by someone.  And, you guessed it.  She is accused of his murder!  Exciting and fun to read.

I finished Flood of Fire by Amitav Ghosh; the last book in his trilogy about the first Opium War between Great Britain and China.  It was great to revisit a lot of the characters that were presented in the first book, Sea of Poppies.  It wasn't quite the quality of book #1; but still a very excellent read.
