Part I spans the English language from its earliest Indo-European roots through to the language-change of the Middle Ages. You'll study Grimm's law, the contributions of the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes to Old English, the Middle English of the Normans, as well as the influence of Chaucer.
Professor Seth Lerer chairs the Comparative Literature Department at Stanford University. He has published books on Chaucer, Anglo-Saxon Literature, and English in the age of Henry VIII.
