This book is for fans of a British comic style akin to Monty Python, though a bit more specific in its appeal to those with intellect. To put it another way, what Terry Pratchett does for fantasy, Adams did for science fiction. Remarkably witty from the start, Adams barrages you with absurdities and wordplay that can, at times, detract from the story itself. But then again, that's rather the point in this case, isn't it? Long story short - If you've ever wondered why people take note of the number 42, or if you've just forgotten your towel, then you'll probably find this book very useful. Or at least mostly harmless.

I really enjoyed this book. I bought another copy at the used bookstore when the movie came out as a refresher and then found my original so I am passing on my extra!

This book is witty and silly and spins a wacky tale about the end of the world. I realized as I reread this book that a ton of common every day references and product names are found here. It was such a fun read !

One of the most imaginative books I've ever read. You'll laugh out loud but it is too hard to explain to someone else what's so funny. It is obvious it took the author 20 years to write it by the number of new ideas and ways to think about things. A good read.

I gave this book five stars. Just kidding! Check this out! If you take Spaceballs, Monsters versus Aliens, Player Piano, and Catch 22, throw them into a blender and purée, you might just end up with this book. This wacky look at intergalactic space travel, zany situations, and preposterous characters permeates the ephemeral, volatile fabric of this convoluted, sometimes witty, often disjointed fabrication. Still its mostly harmless. Like the guy who fell asleep in class and was prodded by his neighbor with the answer to the teachers question about transendentalism; who jumped up and yelled 42; youll discover the answer to life, the universe and everything.

The improbability that someone would write this book is two to the power twenty-five thousand to one against and falling.
The improbability that someone would publish it is two to the power fifty thousand to one against and falling.
The improbability that someone would buy it is two to the power seventy-five thousand to one against and falling.
The improbability that someone would actually read it is two to the power one hundred thousand to one against and falling.
The improbability that a reviewer would place it on a must read list is two to the power of infinity minus one to one against and falling.

I thought that this book was amusing, but even though Ive read that others compare it to Terry Pratchetts humor, I cant say that it was as enjoyable. It definitely has the dry humor that is fun, but its not on my greatest list of reads. However, it is interesting enough for me to continue reading the series because I did like the movie. I guess I was just expecting the book to be a lot better than the film was.

Okay, I have heard about this book for years. Finally got a copy here on PBS! It is a fun book, some a bit out there for me, but I'm fairly new to Science Fiction reading. But I really enjoyed it, particularily the last half of the book. My daughter is going to read it next and I can't wait to discuss it with her, I think it will make the book even better. And I know understand some things people say and know where it came from! Like the answer to lifes questions!

A man wakes up one morning to find a work crew getting ready to destroy his house and aliens getting ready to destroy the Earth. He is rescued by a friend who just happens to be an alien and starts a quest that will lead him to the ends of the universe. This is not a bad book...certainly better than the ones that follow. Just a little on the chaotic side. Characters are introduced that never go anywhere...or are just there to move the plot along. But, if you're a fan of this series, this is where it began.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is a difficult book to describe; it simply must be experienced. Underlying the absurd plot are hints of seriousness and of Douglas Adams' world views. However, mostly, the absurdity and humor win out. I am not sure I will follow Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent on their adventures beyond this first part, but I am glad I was introduced to them. Happy hitchhiking and don't forget your towel!

Join Douglas Adams's hapless hero Arthur Dent as he travels the galaxy with his intrepid pal Ford Prefect, getting into horrible messes and generally wreaking hilarious havoc. Dent is grabbed from Earth moments before a cosmic construction team obliterates the planet to build a freeway. You'll never read funnier science fiction; Adams is a master of intelligent satire, barbed wit, and comedic dialogue. The Hitchhiker's Guide is rich in comedic detail and thought-provoking situations and stands up to multiple reads. Required reading for science fiction fans, this book (and its follow-ups) is also sure to please fans of Monty Python, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, and British sitcoms.

Review
Don't panic! Here are words of praise for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

"It's science fiction and it's extremely funny...inspired lunacy that leaves hardly a science fiction cliche alive."

Washington Post

"The feckless protagonist, Arthur Dent, is reminiscent of Vonnegut heroes, and his travels afford a wild satire of present institutions."

Chicago Tribune

"Very simply, the book is one of the funniest SF spoofs ever written, with hyperbolic ideas folding in on themselves."

School Library Journal

"As parody, it's marvelous: It contains just about every science fiction cliche you can think of. As humor, it's, well, hysterical."

It took a bit for me to get into it, but I enjoyed the book. It had just the right amount of comedy and sarcasm mixed with action and adventure.

I didn't like the film the first time I watched it, in fact I didn't even make it through the whole movie. Eventually (many years later) I tried watching it again and I fell in love with it. So naturally (in my effort to complete as much of the BBC reading list as possible) I decided to read the book. And like the movie, I didn't like it to start. But the more I read, the better it got.

I'm glad I didn't give up on it because it was worth the read.
