I didn't quite know what to expect from Elizabeth Sims but I took a chance and I'm glad I did. Sims's character Lillian Byrd is unique, not entirely loveable and definitely a bit flawed. The mystery was well-written - I read it almost straight through and will try another book in the series. Although there's some humor in the book, it's not a cozy; however, I'm something of a wuss about too much graphic sex and violence and there wasn't anything that I couldn't handle.

Although it's a minor detail, it was also a pleasure to read a book that was printed on good quality paper for a change!

I gave up on lesbian fiction in the 70s because I couldn't find anything I felt was worth reading. Sims has certainly changed my opinion on that! The protagonist (Lillian Byrd) is a regular person who happens to be witty reporter for a small-time Detroit weekly. She also has a way of blundering in, mostly out of innocense, where no one else would go.

This is a fast read. There is a local lesbian bar, a little tastefully done sex & some violence. I won't go into the mystery because it would ruin it for you, but I will say it's a very off-beat one. I would recommend this book for anyone (gay/lesbian or not) with a sense of humor who loves mysteries. This book is the 1st in a series & I'm already looking for the next one.
