Hiya,

Traditional school is starting and many of us are beginning as well. Any Interest in a Homeschool Virtual Box? If so When Is good? I have the stuff or a Starting Box ready and waiting I just need people interesting in swappin'. I was thinking if people are interested in offering one in a week or 2.

What do you mean by a Homeschool Virtual Box?

It is a game that I offer/run occasionally  in the Games forum. Where we swap/trade supplies, books, and Curricullum. Please feel free to read up more on the Different type of Games in the Sticky (red coloured) topics in the Game Forum.

Dear Margaret,

I tried to follow your virtual homeschool box swap last time you did it.  It looks really cool, and yet I am still intimidated, probably because I have never played a game on this or any other site.  I know there is another Children's wish list swap going on right now, but I was wondering if you would be interested in hosting a newbie swap for those of us who have never done it?  I know it is a lot to ask, but if you don't want to maybe someone else who reads this will voluteer?  : )

Amity,

There are several types of swaps in the games forum.  Margaret's Virtual Homeschool Box Swap is pretty unique.  I played in it last time and found the players to be very helpful.  The best way to learn how to play is to just jump in and get started.  Margaret does a great job keeping up with it, so it isn't confusing at all.  She will send you a PM when it is your turn and will tell you exactly what to do.  If you have some materials that you would like to pass along to someone else, you should join and give it a try.  I would say that even though it isn't an official "newbie swap," it would be a good swap for you to start on.

Margaret,

I have been setting some things aside and would love to participate if you start one!

I haven't done a virtual box game, either, but it sounds like fun! I'm in if you start one!

I I would be willing to run a Newbie Game. it will however have to wait until the HS box is done. It would Probably be a fairly simple elephant Swap with a Homeschooling theme. So I guess I would be willing to do that (if there is enough interest) in late Sept/early oct. I am however also very happy to work with new people in my HS box. I will happily give you as much or as little help that you need to help make it workable for you. I do have some players that run every turn by me before they post them to make sure that they are doing it correctly. I want people to have a good time and get what they need out of my games. Please feel free to PM me with Questions or concerns if you have them.

Depending on how soon you plan to run it, I maybe interested. Right now I am doing the children's swap and the Sept wishlist, so I need to work through those some. I will also need to finish up going through and finding what we will not be needing. I spent all summer planning high school for my oldest and now just got started on plannning for the other 3 children! I will watch for it!

Yay!  Thanks Margaret, I will look forward to the newbie game.  I will also watch this round of HS virtual box, b/c I do want to participate at some point.  Late Sept is good for me for the newbie swap.  I will be out of state on vacation leaving mid-sept, back the 23rd.

What is meant by "virtual"? To me, that means "not real". What is being swapped? Is it virtual curriculum like e-books, or actual books?

Michelle, the "virtual" part is the box.  It's a "virtual box," i.e. it's not a real one.  Everyone puts real items up for grabs by posting them and they go into the "box".  Make sense?

This sounds very interesting! I have a whole lot of curriculum that I need to pass along to make room for what we will really be using. Kelley

Hi, I was a newbe  for Maragaret's last Homeschool swap and can say that she was very helpful with all of my questions and she is very generous.  So I would encourage you all to get involved!  It is so much fun!  I did watch one first to get acquainted with the process.  Carrie

I might want to do this.

Can you tell a little more or point me to a link?

For example: Do you have to have all new stuff or just good condition used stuff? How do you decide how much to put in the box? Can you specify a certain age level (k-2 or jr high, etc)

And the big question: If we get something we don't need, is it poor etiquette to post it here? (maybe it's poor etiquette for me to even ask that question. *blush*)

Thanks in advance,

Char

Char,

I did this the last time Margaret had one, so I will see if I can help answer your questions.

First, there isn't an actual box; it is a virtual box.  Margaret starts by listing a variety of homeschool related items that she has that she would like to pass along to others.  She has a play order and we all take turns.  When it is your turn, you can see if there is any item listed that you would like to take.  For every item you select, you replace it with an item that you would like to contribute.  So if you want 2 things that are listed, you would post the 2 items that you are taking out of the virtual box and what  2 things you are contributing to the box.  We go through the play order a few times and at the end of the game, you would mail the items that you contributed to the people that selected them.   You might end up mailing to several different people and you will probably have several different people mailing to you as well.

As far as the items that you contribute, they most definitely can be used items.  Last time we had craft supplies, books, curriculum, magazines, flash cards, stickers, etc.  If you get something that you decide you can't use, I would definitely post it here for someone else to use.

It is a great way to clean out some things you aren't using anymore and bring in some "new to you" things.

I hope this helps.  It is one of those things that is really confusing at first, but once we start it all makes sense.

I never played a swap either, but I would be interested in doing the homeschool one.  I have several things set aside that I know I don't need.
