I went to the link, but I was wondering what the contest is actually for.

I heard about this from another website I belong to and sent a letter to Subway.  I don't plan on eating there anymore either.  It's too bad, too.  Their food is really good.

I've been boycotting them for a few months because of this (it's been posted since Jan.).  I wrote them about it, too, but never rec'd a response.

Did anyone notice the spelling error on the contest page?  It's "bastket" instead of "basket" in the prize listing.  I so wanted to comment on that and let them know my HS'ed child picked up on it right away.

I also asked them in my message to offer at least an "alternate" contest and/or prize.

I'm not exactly fond of Scholastic lately, either.  While they "tolerate" HS'ers, they don't go out of their way at all to market to us, or serve us.

I just read this update from Subway and Scholastic on my local HS board:

---------------------------------

Regarding your concerns about the Subway contest that excludes home
schools from contest eligibility, Scholastic and Subway apologize to
all individuals who have taken offense at this. Our intention was
never to make independent schooled children feel discriminated
against or excluded from this specific promotion.

Throughout the course of the year Scholastic runs a number of
contests and sweepstakes that are open to all teachers and students.
The eligibility of this contest in particular was solely put in place
to award a large group of children with the grand prize of $5,000
worth of athletic equipment. We do however understand how home-
schooled children could benefit from this type of prizing and will
make sure eligibility is open to everyone in future promotions.

We appreciate your feedback and will make sure a similar situation
does not happen in the future.

If anyone has any additional comments to make regarding this contest,
please email Scholastic directly at P&Cconnects@scholastic. com and
we will respond promptly to your concerns. Other email addresses or
phone numbers shown in this blog will not reach individuals who are
equipped to help you. Again, please direct all comments/inquiries to
P&Cconnects@scholastic. com and we would be more than happy to speak
with you regarding this.

Thank you!

whew! now I don't have to boycott subway after all!

It's nice to have Homeschool Legal Defense to speak out for us.

Thanks, Char, for posting the response.

Yeah!! I'm glad we don't have to boycott Subway either.  My kids only eat pizza and McDonald's when eating out (they're VERY picky at home too)  I haven't been able to get them to eat Subway before(they don't like ham & cheese etc.)  They are weird children.  But I had an incredible desire for some Subway today and talked my kids into trying the Spicy Italian with melted cheese.  I called it a pizza sub.  LOL!! They gobbled it up.  Hooray!!  We can branch out on "I don't want to cook today" days.

I wonder what their response would be if we suggested having a "homeschooler" contest? It's been done in the past (particularly in my local area where there are a ton of us).

Anyone want to start letters, petitions, etc.? :) LOL

The kids and I order one sub, split it three ways (they are young) and it's a fairly cheap lunch. Italian BMT, please....

I'm also glad they cleared this up and apologized. My 19 year old son really likes to eat at Subway. All of our family does.

Yeah we like it too, but we stood firm and ate at Firehouse Subs when this was going on.   Glad they apologized.  Hope they learned that we are not all that isolated.

I am so proud of how well homeschoolers stand together - I am so proud to be one of you guys!
