I was reluctant to read this "The House" since several of her recent books have been horrible. "The House" is not up to the quality of the Ms. Steel's earlier books, however, it's getting closer.

First off, try this book just to admire the beautiful period portrait of Danielle Steel on the back cover! A bit reminiscent of Barbara Cartland! And I promise you will like the story too. The book is about a house, a small castle actually, a gift of love built in 1923. Now, in the present, an elderly client leaves a generous sum of money to his workaholic lawyer and tells her to use the money for something wonderful, so she buys the old mansion. Sounds corny, but the author makes it work. Add a handsome architect who arrives on the scene to assist with the remodeling and you have the beginning of a romance. But it is the house that will steal your heart!

This is a nice story, in a typical Danielle Stell style. I enjoyed it because I love houses, so the restoration, etc was very interesting. It has a happy ending with a little bit of mystery.

If you have read Danielle Steel in the past, you pretty much know what to expect and that's what keeps us coming back...she never seems to disappoint her readers, always delivering the tearjerker plotlines, a few twists and turns and then - happily ever after. She's like fast food. You buy her books because you know what you will get and you LIKE it!

Danielle Steel does it again with another great book. This book is about a house that was built in 1932 and left to Sarah a workaholic attorney. She has decided to have it restored, and enlists the help of architect Jeff Parker. You will love the chemistry between these two. A must read for Steel fans.

At first I thought this would be boring; however, I enjoyed it so much I couldn't put it down. An attorney decides to buy an old house (actually sounds like a mansion) with money she inherited from the owner, and renovate it. In the process, she finds love.

I liked the general story of this book, but I did not like the fact that the author repeats herself constantly. This was the first Danielle Steele book I've read, and I was not impressed. The first half of the book could have been reduced to 40 pages if she didn't keep reiterating herself over and over... it made me feel like either she thinks her readers are stupid and have to be reminded of things, or she just needs to remind herself as she wrote. As I said, I was not impressed.

This was predictable and okay. It was not great, but not horrible. I liked all the parts concerning the history of the house. The rest was just another romance novel with all the expected twists. Nothing special.

Sarah Anderson, a beautiful, successful thirtysomething attorney, is having a midlife crisis. She's become a workaholic, spending 60- to 70-hour weeks at the office, and she is involved in an unhappy relationship with a man she only sees on weekends, who refuses to involve her in any other aspect of his life. She lives in a dumpy apartment, which contains the same furniture she used in college, and she has no outside interests other than the sometime boyfriend and her job. Everything changes, however, when an eccentric, elderly client of Sarah's dies and leaves her a small fortune and a message: to use the money for something wonderful, to live well, and to think about something other than work. Following this advice, Sarah purchases the dilapidated old mansion the client had lived in (after finding out that it was her own grandfather who originally built it), breaks up with the cheating boyfriend, and focuses all of her attention on rehabbing the old house. As she works to restore the place, she finds contentment in her new pastime; a nice, normal boyfriend in the architect who is helping her; and familial contentment as both her mother and grandmother find happiness in the purchase of this house. A typical Steel fairy tale.

Not your typical Danielle Steele although there is romance but its more about a house, a history, a mystery, the 1920s/30s and today. Also a lot of information about architecture, style, don't know if the house really exists, but if it does I would love to see it.

The house was magnificent, built in 1923 by a wealthy man for the woman he adored. For her and for this house, he would spare no expense, from the marble floors to the glittering chandeliers. Almost a century later, a young woman walks through its empty rooms. Sarah Anderson is about to do something utterly out of character. An elderly client has died and left her both a generous inheritance and a priceless message: to use his money for something wonderful, to live well, and to think of something other than work.

A workaholic attorney, Sarah had always lived life by the book. With a steady, if sputtering, relationship and a tiny apartment, Sarah cannot explain the force that draws her to the mansion and its history - to the story of a woman who once lived in the house... and to a history she never knew she had.

Sarah enlists the help of architect Jeff Parker, who shares her passion for bringing the old house back to life. As they work to restore the home, as one relationship dies and another begins, Sarah makes a series of powerful discoveries: about the true meaning of a last gift... about the legacies that are passed from generation to generation... and about a future she's only beginning to imagine.

This moving story of a single, workaholic woman attorney REALLY touched my heart. It is centrally her story, but it tells the story of the 18th century couple, the husband of which built the house this modern day woman has inherited...a lovely dual-time period tale of love, and how we can sometimes overlook the most important things until they are right in front of us.
