OK - I specifically ordered THIS book:

http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9780618002245-The+Return+of+the+King+The+Lord+of+The+Rings+Part+3

I wanted a complete set of the Houghton-Mifflin re-issues (that were timed to coincide with the movies) for my son's collection. I already had the rest of them in the matching editions. SO - I deliberately ordered that particular ISBN.

This is what I got:

http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9780345248299-THE+RETURN+OF+THE+KING

which is a 1975 paperback from Ballentine - not even the same publisher.

On top of that, look at the condition of this book:

This just burns me up, especially considering this was supposed to be so J would have a nice set of these books in his classics collection (and yes, I do consider Tolkien a classic!).

Wow!  I'm so sorry you received a book in that condition.  That's awful!

Hopefully you marked the transaction RWP - Wrong Book.  Looks like you got a different ISBN than you had requested.  Even if the book you received had been in pristine condition, because the book was posted incorrectly, this would still be a problem swap.

You might want to check the chain bookstores like Walden's, B. Dalton's or Borders...I remember seeing some pretty nice boxsets for less than $10 the last time I went, which would be around the same cost or cheaper as using credits here, plus you'll be sure to get what you're looking for.

Oh yeah - I marked it RWAP wrong book AND asked the sender for my credit back so I could re-order the book. I also pointed her to the guidelines about both conditions and wrong ISBN numbers. I can't tell if she's a newbie or not, she doesn't have a public profile. To send out a book like this though, all I can say is, I HOPE she was a newbie, b/c otherwise there is absolutely NO excuse for this.

I just bought a hardcover collector's edition set of these from half.com for $15 - that's total, with shipping.  I had to get the collector's edition of The Hobbit separately, and it cost me about $10 altogether, but I'm so glad I did it that way.  I tried wishlisting them, I was even picky about which sets (there are several) I was willing to get, but in the end, for $25 I got a gorgeous set of books, complete with fold out maps, and I couldn't be happier.  On collectible books like these, I think I'd rather just buy.

YIKES! That book is down right scary looking! Hopefully you'll get it all worked out and receive a nice copy of the correct book.

I was tempted to buy the boxed set at Walden's for $10, but they weren't the scholarly editions with Tolkien's notes, like these Houghton-Mifflin books are.

You know the worst of it is she just PM'd me back and based on past experiences with bad book senders I am almost afraid to open her PM for fear it's going to be nasty. Here's hoping...

Edited to say - I guess I worry too much! She was apologetic and returned my credit right away with a note that I should use it to request another copy of the book. Which I've already done, as well as PM'ing the sender to PLEASE double-check the ISBN number...

What did she say?  Hopefully she at least gave you back your credit and a very sincere apology.

Well Bren, I said that, and then I looked up the set I bought here: product.half.ebay.com/Lord-of-the-Rings_W0QQtgZinfoQQprZ116100 and the lowest price is now twice what I paid for mine - and I just bought them a couple of months ago too:P  The prices on books like that fluctuate a lot though, so they may go down next week.  I can vouch for what a nice set of books that is though.  They're gorgeous, have the maps and artwork, and they come in that box case.  I have them displayed on a bookshelf in my living room, and I used to hide my old ones because they were so worn:P

Ten wishers for it here: www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9780395489321-The+Lord+of+the+Rings  But I bet it's a very slow moving list.
