My almost-5 year old is pretty well-behaved and even though this book is oriented towards "badly" behaving kids, it is full of practical and thoughtful advice about enhancing children's self-esteem, focusing on positive behaviors, dealing with peer pressure, and other daily life issues. It is less of a cookbook style to parenting, and more about encouraging parents to consider their goals for the children and their own impact on their children's behavior.
This book provides great tips and insights into raising children. The basic premice is that we, as parents/adults, set the standards for behaving. It covers very practical ideas for discipline and setting rules for appropriate behavior - with focus on how WE respond first.
You'll Love It!!
I read this book when my children were about 9 and 14. It was so valuable for working with and understating my 9 year old. I wish I had read it when my 14 year old was younger. After I read it, I attended a "support" group for moms of kids at my younger child's elementary school hosted by one of the counselors. She brought up this book and she and I raved about it to the other moms. It is a super book and everyone should read it and reflect on the thoughts in it.
