I was going over my 2010 and 2011 Class Lit Reading Lists and all of hard copies are second hand. Not one was new. Not a single one.

Being a member of PBS makes this kind of easy to accomplish, but it's groovy just the same.

Super cheap excellent literature kept out of the landfill.  Almost the ultimate in recycling, I say.

Carry on. I was just pondering.

All of them are and all from PBS.  Almost all the books I get for myself are second hand these days.  This makes me very happy!

I have a treasure trove of reading material with those little old  paperbacks predominating......many with someone's margin scribbles, underlining, and yellowed, dog-eared pages!  For years before I joined PBS, some of my favorite "haunts" were second-hand bookshops. Once, a very odd  thing happened------ I ran across an old, hard-cover copy of famous plays with my MAIDEN name written in the front!  And not only that, but it was in an entirely different city from any of those places I lived before being married!  Beats me, folks . . . . .

I would pick up all those books I knew I wanted to read someday, and that is what I've been doing the last few years.  I don't care about what shape they're in, as long as the words are all there.  The copy of Mme. Bovary that I had tucked away had a very interesting preface by Mary McCarthy. and also about 80 pages on the 1856  trial of the author, the publisher and the printer.  Of course, I can't post any of my beat-up "classics" in here, but I do have other newer stuff that I've actually bought.......for instance, Out Stealing Horses, by Per Petterson.

Full disclosure:  After my kids learned about "Economics", they came home and informed their father and me that we were outstanding practitioners of "Conspicuous non-consumption".    I dunno whether I should be smug about that, or kinda ashamed?

Only two did I actually buy new. Three more are hardcovers that my parents acquired who knows where. Four more are new Penguins with their covers clipped, marked Not For Sale.

I am obsessed with the writer E.F. Benson (who died in 1944)  and own over a hundred of his books (thank  you, ebay).  It doesn't matter to me about the condition of the books I purchase--I want his words.

I must say, though, that I was very surprised to receive a book several years ago that had obviously never been read--I had to CUT the pages open!

Although I'm not doing this year's challenge, I just looked back at the 2010 one.  Of the twelve books that I read, 8 were free on my Kindle.  The other 4 were received from pbs.  I love the fact that many classics are free as ebooks.

All of mine are!  I obtained them from either PBS or the FOL sale.
