Wow, I found a hidden trick in PBS others might want to use!

I do a lot of trading to complete full sets for myself and friends. As such I'm always looking in the Book Browser with searches by Author instead of Title. Sometimes Key Words works and sometimes it doesn't. But I discovered how to find books NOT posted in the Book Browser.

I went to the Author page for Bathroom Reader's Institute (yah, it really exists) and saw over 100+ books listed. So I began to go through the list and add them to my Wish List. While doing just the first 20 there were 3 that asked if I wanted to order the book. Huh? I'd already done a normal Book Browser search that showed exactly 0 (zero) books available in the PBS system. Even asking for ALL BOOKS only showed 6. Now, here were 3 that weren't in any of the Posted catagories that someone has that I could order. You bet I did!

So, if you're looking for a pareticular author, don't just do a Book Browser search. Bring up any of his or her books and click on the author's name to actually go to their page of all titles. None of them will indicate if they're available, but when you hover over the title of each one to add it to your Wish List, you may find things that AREN'T listed in normal searches. It makes me wonder how many of those people realize their books aren't listed, even though they are the ONLY one in the system with that title.

To help others get this info, if you think it's worth it, write a short response to this topic so it keeps getting bumped back up the list so it won't get lost on page 2 or 13 or 29. Maybe someone at PBS will decide to make it a permanent part of one of the "sticky" posts for everyone. I'd love to see and add to a "sticky" post of Tricks, Hints, and Unknown Secrets of PBS.

Ken, you should post this over on the Questions about Paperback Swap forum as some members might not look here too often.

Ken,  take a close look at the titles you found.  There will be something different about those listings.  From the details page go all the way to the bottom and look at the Genre section. Sometimes the Genre is missing or incomplete, which is  why some things are difficult to find.  Which means you have to search different ways to search completely.  Your author search found some things that your title search did not.  It's worth looking for what's different about those listings and then you will know why.

I have a book on my wl that cannot be found by Genre as there is no Genre attached to that book.  The only way to find it on PBS is by title or author.  Now the fix for this is contacting PBS and asking for them the add the Genre.

Thanks, Ken, that could be helpful.

Actually when you are on the book page, if you click the box that says "More Options," Edit Book Data is an option. You can upload a picture, add author, series info if it's not there, a description, author, genres, weight, pages and all kinds of things.

I try to go through my shelf periodically to make sure that my books have the proper info and a picture if at all possible - it's unlikely they will be ordered if there is no description, and I know they won't come up in the genre searches if that is missing. I recently ordered a book that had no author and no genre, but I saw it on a shelf I was browsing. I put in the edits so that when I'm ready to pass it along, it has a better chance of being ordered.

Jodi,  I tried but I cannot find a way to add the Genre.  I was able to edit/add to Book Wiki.  There's no description of the book and I do not see how to add a description.

Ok, I found edit book data and submitted some info.  The Genre was hard because there was no Juvenile fiction to choose and hard to find something that offered magic as a choice. I got this message:

Thank you

Valerie - although there is no "Juvenile" there are both Children's Books and Teen and Young Adult genres - sometimes you have to hunt to find the one that best fits your book. :-) Teen and Young adult has a subcategory of Literature and Fiction.

Yes,  I tried all the genre combinations until Magic was offered as a choice.  Thank goodness putting in the description was easy!

Yeah, Jodi is right. When the books aren't showing up in your search, my experience has shown it was missing information. (sometimes even an author name!)

So the way to fix it is the drop down menu "More Options" and clicking on "Edit Book Data". Then update that book with all information you have, like genre, weight, picture, etc.

I started doing that years ago, because I was seeing books posted with no picture and no information and I got tired of being frustrated by it and having to hunt the info on the net. Now I just make sure to fix and add all info on the books I post and often ones I come across, if I have time. As they say, if you want something done right, do it yourself! lol

If everybody updated at least their own books, the information would be damn near complete for everything.

This book on my wl  has no image.  How do you upload a book image?  Could I use the one on Amazon?

I'm learning a lot today!

I add images to book data all the time. All you have to do is find an image on Amazon or another book site, save it locally (on your computer or tablet) and then on the book data page click the button under the placeholder/blue rectangle to find where you have it saved. It's important that the image not be too big (digital size) or it won't upload, the screen there gives the required size limit.  If I'm posting a book to my shelf and I can't find an accurate image I scan in the actual cover. I've done that on some of my older books where the book was so old that my copy's cover wasn't available digitally.

Linda,  thank you I will try that!  I'm a novice at posting any pictures so we will see how this goes.

I managed to submit an image and it's waiting approval.  The cool thing about it is,  when you click on the title  it it shows the image and says "Awaiting Approval".  Also the genre is now listed!  Thank you book data editors!

OP:  Bathroom Readers--go to their website, you can find their entire list.  I have found many on here.  What I cannot find on here, I can usually get at Better World Books, NEW, for less than $4 per book.  I have nearly a dozen in my house right now.  :)

The image was added!  I'm impressed, they did fast work!  Yesterday I found a better image and tried to submit but it said,  an image was already submitted for approval.  I had the 2nd image as a backup in case the 1st was rejected.

Thank you Book Image Editors!
