Wow, I found a hidden trick in PBS others might want to use!

I do a lot of trading to complete full sets for myself and friends. As such I'm always looking in the Book Browser with searches by Author instead of Title. Sometimes Key Words works and sometimes it doesn't. But I discovered how to find books NOT posted in the Book Browser.

I went to the Author page for Bathroom Reader's Institute (yah, it really exists) and saw over 100+ books listed. So I began to go through the list and add them to my Wish List. While doing just the first 20 there were 3 that asked if I wanted to order the book. Huh? I'd already done a normal Book Browser search that showed exactly 0 (zero) books available in the PBS system. Even asking for ALL BOOKS only showed 6. Now, here were 3 that weren't in any of the Posted catagories that someone has that I could order. You bet I did!

So, if you're looking for a pareticular author, don't just do a Book Browser search. Bring up any of his or her books and click on the author's name to actually go to their page of all titles. None of them will indicate if they're available, but when you hover over the title of each one to add it to your Wish List, you may find things that AREN'T listed in normal searches. It makes me wonder how many of those people realize their books aren't listed, even though they are the ONLY one in the system with that title.

To help others get this info, if you think it's worth it, write a short response to this topic so it keeps getting bumped back up the list so it won't get lost on page 2 or 13 or 29. Maybe someone at PBS will decide to make it a permanent part of one of the "sticky" posts for everyone. I'd love to see and add to a "sticky" post of Tricks, Hints, and Unknown Secrets of PBS.

I'm not sure I understand what is happening that you're describing. Are the available books linked editions that aren't getting linked properly? Different bindings or printings?

In any case, this sounds like a bug in how PBS behaves that the site should fix, not a clever user trick.

Sorry, Ken, but I don't understand what you are saying here, and your last sentence quoted above is especially confusing. Can you give an example? Withut more complete information or an example, I would agree with Laura that if you are seeing an anomally it is likely to be a programming bug, and something that should be brought to the attention of the site programmers to address and fix.

I think your problem here could be due to the varying punctuation and spellings. If I just put in Bathroom Reader, the site offers all these ways to complete it.

  • Bathroom Reader's Institute
  • Bathroom Reader's Hysterical Society
  • Bathroom Reader' Institute
  • Bathroom Readers' Hysterical Society
  • Bathroom Readers' Institute
  • The Bathroom Readers' Institute

If you just put "Bathroom" into the author search, instead of trying to be too specific, then you get results for all of them in one search. I get 191 listings in the book browser this way.

I also have a few books on my WL that, for some reason, do not have the author in the book listing. Those versions won't show up when doing an author search either I would think.

Cathy A. seems to have given the best answer. When I went back to do a search again, I put in Bathroom Reader's Institute and it came up with only 6 books. When I redid the search shifting the ' one space to Bathroom Readers' Institute it came up with 142 books. It would be nice if there were a programming way to link the different spellings, but I can see how other author's names could be confused, i.e. Steven, Stephen, Stefen, etc. all with the same last name or very close.

Thank you, Cathy A.
