I have a friend that is a member of PBS-I recommended it to her. She asked me this question and I can't figure it out either. She only has a few books on her shelf right now but some of them had a large amount of the book posted-like 400 on the 1. Ok, she never posts on the forums, she is not listed in the member profile, it is not being ordered by a buddy or anyone else that she has already sent a book to. So, how are people finding her bookshelf  to order the book from when she isn't next up on the FIFO line or even close to it? I did tell her how to check book numbers on the reminder list. It isn't being ordered when she posts it either--it is months later and  I can't explain to her how people are getting to her bookshelf. Help me understand so I can explain it to her. Maybe there is something that I just don't know!

It sounds to me that your friend got lucky and made it through the FIFO line quickly.  Sometimes books that are popular have hundreds of copies in the system, but also hundreds of people requesting them.  So her book came up in the line a couple of months after she posted it, and was ordered.

Your friend should at least create a profile so members could find her and her books more easily.  (I'm a Tour Guide, and we always try to encourage members to do this.  She'd make her personal Tour Guide much happier if she would.)  Also, PBS studies have shown that members with Profiles receive roughly twice the number of requests to their bookshelves as members who do not make public profiles!

Doesn't the reminder list copies available change as the amount of books on PBS goes up or down? If so, it was showing  all of those books in the FIFO line just a few days before her order. This has happened 2 times now. Weird! I did tell her to add a profile when she has the time. We will just chalk it up to a fast moving FIFO list if you do not know of any other way to get to a bookshelf. Thanks for the reply! I thought maybe there was some other way to get to bookshelves that I was just unaware of being there.

Is she a boxer? Some people look in the boxer thingamabobbie (technical tour guide term) to see if people have say more than one book of a series or something like that.

I was going to ask if she was a boxer too.  A lot of people use that to see who has a book figuring if they paid to be a boxer they won't ignore the book request.  Sometimes when a book has a lot of copies posted like that you can hit a string of inactives and wait literally weeks for the request to be accepted as the offer keeps timing out on a few people at 5days each.

Also it's possible that someone got a book from her before, made a note that she had this book and went back to order it from her directly.  Knowing that she sent them a good book before.  I think you can do this even if the person doesn't have a profile-if you click on your transaction archive and hit the PM button it should bring up the option to go to that person's shelf.

Or it could be like the others said-a popular book with a fast moving FIFO line.   The RL doesn't tell you what place in line you are. So it's possible that between book orders, cancelled accounts, vacations holds, and timed out requests that she moved up the line within a few months.

No, she isn't a boxer, I forgot to add that. And since she has only sent out a few books, she checked and it wasn't from anyone that she already sent a book to in the past. It must have been a fast moving FIFO line! It is good to know that those lines can move so quickly!

Some do move very quickly and some dont move at all. I have a book which I have the only copy (at least I think havent checked it in a long time) of listed that has never been ordered.

Is that really true about having a profile? I entered some things about myself onto my profile page today. I'll wait for the requests to come rolling in. Hee hee ;)

A book that's hugely popular (like Kite Runner for example) will move very very quickly.  I really think that's all it is.

Does she write reviews for her books?

Sometimes I'll browse through the reviews and I'll end up ordering directly from a reviewer's shelf.

If there's a book that DH liked, I'll look through the reviews to find someone else that liked it and go see what they have posted with the thought that maybe they will have similar tastes to my DH and I'll find something else that he'd like to read.

Michelle, when I click on your name, I don't see a profile.  It takes me directly to your shelf.  You might want to check your privacy controls to see if you have your profile visible to others.
