I know that my mother's grandfather came from Lithuania.  Their name their was Valbainekoff (not sure of the spelling).  It was changed at Ellis Island to something that is nothing like the original name, something that clerk must've made up.

My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Bichler (pronounced "bickler"), which, we were once told by a former rabbi at my parents' synagogue, means bookbinder!

I don't know any other history, but my Dad's cousin has been doing some genealogy of my father's side of the family because we knew almost nothing.  I'll have to ask him what he's found out.
