This book is excellent. I became so enamored with Montaigne after reading Bakewell, that I bought the complete set of his essays and also read When I Am Playing with My Cat... (great book, lousy title) about his life and writings, with more quotes and conveying a bit better a sense of the person). It is amazing how alive and how contemporary Montaigne's writings seem, and how open he is even about the most personal dimensions of his life. Reading him and about him, you'll feel as if he's in the room with you, and one of your best friends....who constantly makes you smile with amusement and recognition.
