I ordered a book. FIrst member couldn't find it so canceled the request. The next in line claimed to ship the book at the beginning of January. After waiting a month, it never showed up. PBS claims it was lost in the mail.  I was not put on the list for the next person to send me the book.  I checked and there were four copies available. However when I went to order it, the same person who marked it lost in the mail came up.  It should still not be on his list as being posted back in 2010.  I don't think it was ever mailed.

Anyway, how do I bypass him and go to the next person to order this book? Is there a way to locate what members have this book available?

Thanks!

If the person who had the "Lost" transaction is coming up as the next person in the FIFO line, it would have to be that they reposted it, and three other members posted it afterwards.  It cannot be the same copy of the book you requested (unless they actually did not mail because maybe for some reason they couldn't find the book, and then when they finally found it they didn't send because it was so obviously past due mailing deadlines but instead reposted the book when the transaction ended.  Not the "right" thing to do, but a possible explanation?)

Anyway, same member has a copy of the same title, and they are first in the FIFO sendout line.  There isn't any way to bypass this person under the normal system.  Perhaps using the Gold Key membership function of being able to order multiple copies of a book might work: you could order two copies - one copy (the "Lost" transaction person) and then order a second copy from a new Sender, then cancel the first order.  But in order for this to work, you'd need to be a Gold Key member.  Unless you have Gold Key, you cannot order multiple copies of the same ISBN.

If you are not a Gold Key member, perhaps you could order a different edition that might be available for the same title?

Also members cannot mark a book lost. Only PBS can do that.

I can explain this part:

PBS claims it was lost in the mail.  I was not put on the list for the next person to send me the book.

If a book hasn't been marked "received" by the 26th day after it was marked mailed (or 35th day if it was traveling outside the contiguous United States) the server automatically marks the book "lost."  If there are no other copies of the book available, the book will be placed on the requestor's wish list.  If there are other copies available, the book is placed on your reminder list.  The reason the next copy of the book  isn't automatically ordered (as with a canceled transaction) is that lost books sometimes do arrive.  The site recommends waiting a couple of weeks before reordering, since if the lost book arrives, unless it has a very late postmark, the requestor still has to mark it received.

I can't explain the posting dates, though.  If you like, you could go down to the bottom right corner of any page here.  Under "company" click on "contact us" and use the Feedback option to ask how this happened.

What they said.  If a member indicates they have mailed a book, it is removed from their bookshelf...no way for the member to get it back on without posting from scratch (thus a new date).  The PBS system automatically marks books 'Lost' a specific number of days after they were marked 'mailed'...again, not something a member can do to their own account.

Thanks for the answers!. I sent a PM to the guy and asked him if he has the book. If not, I'm gonna pay a visit to the library to see if they have a copy to check out.

I guess I'll have to chalk the date thing as a "computer glitch".  As a matter of fact, I will have to say this whole book order was a computer glitch. Who knows, maybe he had a computer glitch on his end also?     (I'm waving the white flag)

There is a way to post two copies of one book to your shelf.  It is rare, as the system allows us to post only one copy at a time.  But if you received two copies, such as a sender who failed to mark the book as sent and you marked the book as received, then we can have two copies of one book on our shelf.

That could explain it, Emily.  If we double click while posting a book, or use the browser's "back" button, or if we post a book during a server hiccup, it can double post to our bookshelf.

I would consider the double posting as a computer glitch.  Still waiting for member to get back to me.  If he has the book, I will take it. If he doesn't, he can end the listing so it can  roll to the next member.  I hope this resolves this strange issue.

I would check the ISBN of the book on the member's bookshelf to the one you requested. I would find it more likely that it is a different ISBN than second copy posted 2-3 years ago. Hopefully you can figure it out and get a copy of the book soon! Since it is a book available in the system, you could also try posting in the Book Bazaar to see if you can find someone willing and able to ship the book soon and you could order it directly from their book shelf.

Yes, Melanie, it's the same ISBN.  Never heard of the Book Bazaar, so I will have to check into that.  Thanks for your suggestion
