I see this kind of thing all the time, Cathy! Can anyone explain the rationale behind this?

Exactly.  If you don't want to sell the book, don't post it!  Who in their right mind...I can't even think of a book I would consider paying $500 for.  Maybe a first edition of something old and very cool.  Maybe.

Is it carved into gold plates and autographed? Or maybe the used copy belongs to someone like the Queen of England and you are paying more for who touched it, than the story in the book?

I was looking on Amazon at Angus Donald's new release, King's Man - just released, mind you and the new HC copy is around $16.00 BUT already there is a used copy for $140.73!!! I can't for the life of me figure out what some people are thinking! Other than the fact that it ships from Germany, I can see nothing spectacular or usual aboout that book! grrr......

What's funny about this is the edition they're listing (a new reprint) isn't even out until Aug. 1. I know ARC's have gone out, so is that what they're selling?

I was looking at an obscure book today on amazon and they wanted $999.99 used for it.  Come on.  it only got 3 stars as the highest rating!  If you don't want to sell it, don't list it.

Whenever I see listings like this (especially when it's a used paperback selling for more than a new paperback -- i.e., clearly not a rare hardcovered first edition), I just want to email the seller: ARE YOU SERIOUS??

I assume they're just mistakes in listing, but still one wonders....
