I couldn't find the book requested from me, so I canceled the request.  Then not 10 minutes later I found it.  I sent a PM to the requester apologizing and saying I will try to reinstate the request so I can send it to her, but I don't see how to do that.  Is it possible?

When you cancelled the request, the request automatically rolled over to the next person in line with the book.  If there were no more copies posted, then the book was automatically added to their wish list.  So, if you post the book again, it will get offered to the first person in line on the wish list.

If there were many other copies of this book, you will go back to the end of the line if you repost it.

Does canceling a request ding my record in some way?  Obviously I made an error, so it's my fault, I'm just wondering if this will affect my ability to use the website in some way.

No. Not unless you do it repeatedly. If you noted the reason, as requested, then you are fine.

I'm under the impression that PBS counts how often this option is used. They are watching for repeated problems, not single incidents. PBS is well aware that life happens. Books are misplaced. Water is spilled.

At least your book showed up within the hour.  Last time I had that happen it showed up 3 or 4 months later, hiding between the sheets in my linen closet...apparently I was reading while putting away clean laundry lol.
