I just tried to visit the bookshelf of a member here and they have it set to "private". didn't know you could do that or WHY would you not want someone to be able to order from you? I thought that was what vacation hold was for.

Some people prefer to go strictly FIFO.

I think it is a holdover from people being on Facebook, and just setting everything to private without thinking it through.  Really, what is the big deal with showing what you have to offer?  Isn't the idea to get orders?  Do they not understand that shipping more than one book at a time saves them money?  I always wonder what they don't want anyone to know they have - pornography?  occult books?  But, I really think it is the paranoia created by social networking that makes people hesitant to put anything public.

Some people are die-hard FIFO followers and don't think the line should ever be skipped in anyway like by ordering direct from someone or ordering multiples. Some people may not even know that it's set to private. Others are embarrassed by what they read and have family or friends using PBS.  Although if I noticed a relative or friend of mine on here had everything set to private that would automatically alert me to the fact that they're embarrassed by what they read.

There are also people who havebeen stalked on the internet and so keep things set to private to prevent a potential stalker from getting their info.

I posted a WL book last night and the wisher had their WL set to private but not their bookshelf. It's an erotic romance and my first thought was that maybe she's embarrassed about reading erotic romances. It would have been nice to possibly ship multiples to her but it's no big deal to ship just one.  It just means I can't send as many books out this month in my postage budget.

I think Mary's point about stalkers is a good one. If someone post a book directly to your shelf, the system will give them your mailing address.

totally agree about stalkers. I think facebook has made a lot of people parinoid about being found, and they don't want to be judged for what they read. I also think that, to some degree, books are a reflection of your soul, who you are, and if those two conflict (for example a person in a Christian community that is judgemental instead of supportive and that person happens to be gay), you won't want other people to see.

I know quite a large number of folks who read both Christian fiction and erotica.  I can see not wanting your Mother In Law seeing that.

I think my question relates to this topic.....

I recently received 2 wish listed books and wanted to look at the senders book shelves to see if they might have some other books I'd be interested in ordering from them.  I went to Member Directory, typed in their names and both have chosen to not make a PBS Public Profile so there's no way I can look at their shelves.  Or is there???  I've read the responses posted here and can see why some people might not want to make their shelves public, but neither of these books would qualify...a James Patterson and a Heather Graham.  I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want their shelves viewable if they wanted to swap books.  I mean, I do understand about the stalker thing and the embrassed thing, but I don't about the FIFO.  Has anyone else come across this same situation?  Is there a solution?  I just figured if the members had one book I wanted maybe they have more!

Thanks,

Shirley

Duh!!!     I just figured out how to access their shelves.  I must have been having a "Senior Moment".  Please disregard this post!!

When you request a book, you can use the ORDER MORE FROM MEMBER button to look at someone's shelf. I don't think that is affected by setting a shelf to private.

The stalker point makes sense, and I actually had a stalker from another book site.  It was  a woman who said she didn't live that far and might come visit me.  She sent me pictures of herself and told me way more about herself than I wanted to know (some of it really bad).  Uh, no, I really don't want an uninvited houseguest that might bring all her problems with her.  I emailed her back and told her that I was not the answer to her problems, luckily she understood.  I got a PO box the next day and changed my shipping address.  So, I am still public, but no one can find out where I live.

Shirley, I have several Heather Graham books.

I think private is also the default setting; so some members may not realize that their shelf is set to private and they didn't know they could change it.

nope private is not the default setting as far as I can tell. Or it wasn't when I joined 3 years ago. regarding the stalker issue, this is the only place I've ever had stalker problems--I'm not on any other social media sites. An acquaintance who has opposing moral, social, and political views to mine, found" me here and went off on every post I made for a couple weeks. if I didn't respond to her here either in forum or Pm, she sent me a nasty email. PBS didn't see it as an issue though.

I don't think the real problem with stalkers is ppl who stalk you on the site, but real life stalkers. If you're bookshelf is public and you use your home address to have your books sent to, it's easy for someone to get your home address from this site.
