I added tags to my bookshelf - I am using common tags and they are being used my many members.  However when I use it in a keyword search the book doesn't appear in the search.  I had thought it was more of a filter process.  For example  instead of romance - historical romance and all books with that tag would be listed.  I looked in the hep docs and it doesn't explain how to use the tags to search for books.  I also wanted to use it to new authors using a specific tag, but now it seems that Tags have nothing do with any searches.   If i use the Tag Cloud - the same thing - a tag I added to a book doesn't show up on the tag search.  Thanks in advance

To use tags to search you have to bring up a book with that tag and then clicking on the tag. Or if you bring up the Tag Cloud.  Under Community down at the bottom of the list is Club Tag Cloud. THat shows the most popular tags.  From there you can bring up My Tag Cloud which shows all your tags.  If you click on one of the tags it'll bring up all the books that people have put that tag on-not just you.

I use tags for my reminder list books.  They are planning on doing away with the reminder list and combining it with the WL. Well I have hundreds of books on my RL and I don't want them all on one big list.  Many are books I would never spend a full credit on but would order in a deal or BOB trade when my BOB account is off hold.  Also if you tag them then you can put a link in your signature so other people can see your RL books.  Many people do this with their TBR.  You just have to make it personal by putting your nickame or initials or something.

Tags are not supposed to be used to not the damage to a book or things like "missing dust cover" or "non-smoking home" and things like that.  Those tags make people think that the book they order might have those traits when they don't.  I use notes to mark unpostables and such because only I can see them.

It wasn't on your tag cloud or the club tag cloud? If it wasn't on the club tag cloud then not enough books were tagged with that tag.  It only puts the most heavily used ones on the cloud. If it wasn't listed on your tag cloud then all I can think is that you maybe didn't hit save or something.

TPTB have said that once tags are used more, they will be searchable.

I use tags for my reminder list books....    You just have to make it personal by putting your nickame or initials or something.

Mary, exactly how is this done?  Do you go to each of the books on your RL list, add your chosen code word (like initials, or someting) and then you can find them in the general listings by bringing up that word?  Do you do a search for that word?  I'm not understanding this, and it sounds like a great idea - insurance, if you will, against that one big list.

Like you, I don't want them all mushed together.  My WL is for wishing!  (The books on that list generally are not yet in the system.)  My RL is a list of available books for ordering later, when I have more credits, or just to remember that it sounded interesting and I MIGHT like to read it someday.  Usually it is about enough credits, that is the list I usually order from.  I'd like to follow up with your method if I can!   Thanks in advance!   :)   D.

And after you tag them, do you delete your RL so it won't get all mixed in with the WL??   Sounds a little bit  inconvenient, if you have to search for your word to put together your list.   Hmmmmm...  Hope I'm wrong about that part!   :)    D.

Tags are really useful if you have a book listed under a different ISBN number.  Such as one version of a book is WL and another version isn't.  It will help get your non WL book ordered.  I also like to put the pen names of an author in tags.  But you can also edit book data for that.

It is time consuming and I don't have them all done yet.  I put the books I know I will really want some day on my actual RL and don't delete those. But I still tag them.  The ones that I'm keeping on my RL are books that are WL right now but I know won't be WL for long and I dont' want them on my WL. Or books that I definately want but I'm just not ready to order now.

All the books that I'd only want as part of a deal or a BOB trade I tag and remove from my RL. When I want to look at the list (which is actually pretty rare), I just pull up the club tag cloud and then MY Cloud.  Or I pull up my Reminder List and bring it up from one of the tags there.  When I get a book I log it into my TBR pile and if the tag shows up-I remove the tag. I do need to go through and remove some duplicate titles though.

My tag is Ozzie-RL.  Ozzie is my dog.  It's personal so that when someone else sees the tag they know that the Ozzie part doesn't relate to them and no one else is going to use the tag.  You don't want to just use "My Reminder List" or "reminder list" because someone else might use that tag then then you'll get all their books as well as your own.

Some people tag their WL with their position # but I don't see the point in this because your # fluctuates a lot.  Tagging those just seems like unneccessary work to me since it doesn't help you move up the line faster.

Some people tag their TBRS and post a link and tell people to make them an offer if they see more than 1 book they want. Some people tag their BIR to share it with everyone.

I also do the WL tag thing when I post a different version of a WL books.  I put a tag something like "1 posted under ISBN xxxx".

Thanks, Mary - yep, that's a lot of work!  But you probably have LOTS of books on your lists, too.  I was thinking of my initials:  D.R.Y. or something like that.  It's really quite a system.   I'll give it a whirl.    :)    D.
