homophobic, religious idiot. Sorry, I needed to vent. I just read this article   http://thinkprogress.org/2008/11/18/huckabee-gay-rights/

and had to come here to vent.  OMG, there hasn't been enough violence against the GLBT community????  While I believe that the right to get married is a civil rights issue, in no way would I ever take away from what the black community had to go though for decades.  On the other hand, let's talk Matthew Shepard or Lawrence King or....this bit from the article:

To suggest that a civil rights movement must meet some sort of violence threshold is an incredibly dangerous argument — not to mention blind to the serious violence gay people have already suffered. 16.6 percent of all hate crimescrime because of their sexual orientation.” reported by the FBI in 2007 “resulted from sexual-orientation bias,” and the number of hate crimes directed against gays and lesbians increased six percent from 2006. More striking, a 2007 study by the University of California, Davis, found that “[n]early four in 10 gay men and about one in eight lesbians and bisexuals in the United States have been the target of violence or a property.

I'm almost speechless except for all the bad words that I want to call him right now...

It made me want to send him a list of all the friends I've had who have been hurt or killed in gaybashing.

Jeanne, why don't you do that?  This ignorant scumbag needs to understand what he said; and personalizing it just might penetrate his thick skull.  Maybe....it's worth a try.

Huckabee is an ignorant, reich-wing, religious wing-nut.  How anyone could consider voting for him for President is a mystery to me.

As stated, he conveniently fails to acknowledge the murder of Matthew Shepard. Does he know how many teens are homeless because they're family rejects their sexual orientation? And when you're homeless you're pretty vulnerable.

There was a gay man just killed just last week in Syracuse, NY. A guy in his neighborhood who knew he was gay, walked right up to him, told him he didn't like him "being gay out in the open" and shot him point blank.  I was pretty shocked it didn't make national news - which then make me think there are a lot of true hate crimes happening all over this country, that don't get national attention.  It's so terrible.

I'm sure that many hate crimes/murders against the GLBT community are under the radar, therefore not counted & not visible.  Which is why some doofus like Huckabee gets away with saying what he does, plus, he probably doesn't give a rat's patootie about the GLBT community other than now that he's not running for president he can say what he actually feels about us.

Everytime I read someone say they wish he'd run for president or something like that I cringe.

My (younger) supervisor at work liked him as a presidential candidate - I let her know what I thought of her choice...;-)  It makes me shudder at the thought had he gotten to the actual presidential election.

I know - it's pretty scary that someone actually believes he would make a good president.  I can't believe he was Governor of Arkansas!  But then, George Dubya Bush was elected twice, so I shouldn't be surprised.   I still remember the headline on the front page of one of the UK papers, when he was elected AGAIN in 2004, "How could 50 million people be so stupid?"

It is always on my mind when participating in some discussions that there is a HUGE BIG TEEMING mass of Born-again and again and again (as though they didn't get it right the first time) folks, especially women, here on PBS.

I would like to think they are possibly the more enlightened ones out there.  Unfortunately, they are also bondage queens, a title I use to describe women who are blindly needy of men's appoval and love.   Huckabee is very scary because he appears SOOOOOOOOOO charming.  He appears SOOOOOOOOO sane.  Then you listen to someone like Rachel Maddow challenge him just a little bit and off he goes!  You can see the hate and sick closed mindedness that motivates him to think he is so RIGHT.  I pray for him and his followers that they will not be LEFT BEHIND! SOON.

OH yea, love the born agains & the ones that also call themselves Jesus freaks - that name just freaks me out.

I think that there is a big difference between faith (what ever religious tenants you may or may not follow) and BLIND faith.  Over the years I went from being totally into church as a child to slowly getting away from the religion I was raised & schooled in.  And what I have heard & seen with people is that they either have faith and are open to questions & questioning it or they have blind faith, totally believe what the religious leader of choice says and fear questions/questioning said faith.  And to me that is the scariest thing about religion, that blind faith that allows people to discriminate freely to the extreme of blowing themselves up.

There are also a handful of more enlightened Christians - those who understand the teachings of Jesus and follow Him in a truly righteous manner.  Can't throw the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak.

L - good point & a good reminder.  Actually, I've been able to learn & rethink how I feel about Christianity because of the few that are as you described.  And those people are the ones I would be in my faith 'category', able to maintain a faith, but still question and search for better answers.  The ones I feel who  follow the teachings of Jesus and try to exemplify him.  Does that make sense?  It's early for me, my head cold is making me feel foggy & I'm not sure if I'm explaining it well enough, let me know.  It's basically something that I've been doing a lot of thinking about.

I'm a christian and Huckabee is a loser.  I hate, hate, HATE that he speaks for christians.  He doesn't speak for me.  What's scary is that he gets national attention when he speaks!

I feel bad for him. He's obviously uneducated in the issue, and thats too bad. He didn't say anything that really really offended me and the gay cutie sitting on my lap! (sorry, my bff just needed to know!)
