I just got an IPad, and am wondering if PBS has or is planning an app interface?

HI

there is an iphone app but the site does not list an Ipad app.  You might want to contact PBS directly under the conact me tab and ask if they plan to build one?

I assume the iPad has a browser, can't you just open the website in that?

I use Safari.  There is also the mobile version of the page.   At the bottom of the page, under Search for a book.

I do not recommend the iPhone App.  The only thing I use the App for is if I want to scan book barcodes.  Was a waste of money.

If you use Safari on the Ipad you can make a page just for the parts of PBS you want to go to.

Just enter Safari and put in the URL of the page you want to go to or navigate to it. Then at the top is a small icon of a square with an arrow in it. Hit that, and click "Add to Home Screen".

It'll make that page a button on your screen that will take you straight there.

I have an iPad, and use the Safari browser to view the site.  The only thing it does not let you do is format your text on the forums.  You have to add in HTML if you want to have spacing or italiacs in your post.

And I get the auto check rather than the spell checker.  Argh!

PBS doesn't develop the apps, they just list some of them that people have developed that work for the site. I haven't heard good things about most of them.

I hadn't realized the iPhone app was really that bad until I needed to use it at Borders.

All I wanted to do was to tell if I already had a book or not.  And the app functionality would show me only my Books I Have Read list.  WL/TBR gave me only a black screen.  And Reminder List?  Not included.

It's a shame that something that could be so handy drove me to squinting at my lists through Safari.

Any new updates on these?

The iPhone app was useful if only for the barcode scanner...until the iOS 5 update. Now, the app just shuts itself down every time I try to scan a barcode. And since that was its only really useful function in the first place, it's now just taking up space. I keep saying I'm going to delete it, but I keep hoping for an update.

Mine, too - just shut down when I try to scan barcodes, I mean. (I have the iPhone version.)  I wish I could get in touch with the developers, and figure out how to fix it. I love going through thrift stores and finding books that are highly wished for. It would be so much quicker and easier if I could scan them. I would be able to get you guys the books you want faster! I can type them all in, but it takes forever.

My next request for them would be to get the next step integrated as well and be able to AirPrint the shipping label after I've posted a requested book.

I agree, the iPhone app is a waste of money. It was too expensive to begin with (for the features it had). I think the guy has just abandoned it. I wish somebody would develop a good one. Must not be many software developers in the PBS community?

Okay, it's 2013.  Anything new on the app front I can use with my iPad2?

I use Safari and the website.  There is also the mobile format, with a link at the bottom of the page.  That has less on the page, which should make it load faster.

I'm on my iPad right now on the regular site and it works just fine.

What features are you looking for in an app that are not available on the regular website?

I would personally love to have a scanner linked to the website.  Not happening at this time.

A man in the library today showed me how he uses the PBS app on his iPhone to scan the ISBN of a book, then we could see what he told me was the number of people wanting that book on PBS.

I'd just like to be able to scan the ISBN.

The iPhone app should run on the iPad and provide that functionality. It was kind of hit or miss for me, but other people said they didn't have trouble scanning books with the iPhone app.

I scan books with the goodreads app, which I think is easier to use, then use the Book Links drop down on the GR page to open the book on PBS and view or post that way.

I think we can use the iPhone app on the iPad to scan books to see if they are wished for, and how many.  But I cannot use the app to do much on PBS.  My app shows buttons that do not function.   So the scanner does not link to the Safari version of the website.   I end up with either a scanner or a website, not both.

I'll try the iPhone app, thanks.  What's the name of the app? Don't have a smartphone so have no idea which one to download.
I just would like to scan multiple books and the number of requests would give me an idea how long before I can send them on.
