I am trying to post a book but the ISBN# comes up with a different title.  So how do I post this book?  Its a Heartsong Presents book maybe this a a common problem with this type?  any answers out there.

Could be an error, or publisher re-used an ISBN.  Check Amazon and see if the ISBN here at PBS is correct for the book that comes up.  If it's an error, the data correction team can fix it.  Otherwise if your book isn't the one appearing on PBS with that ISBN, you will need to list it with a Short ISBN...these are specific to PBS, intended for one time use, and directions should be in the help section.

In order to generate a listing with a "short ISBN" all you need do is select "Post a Book Without an ISBN" from the options at the top of the Post Books page.  When posting books in this manner, remember to include as much information as possible, like number of pages, publisher, etc...of particular importance is the description (the information on the back cover of the book if it's a paperback, or from the inside of the dust jacket if it's a hardcover and the dust jacket is present).  Non-ISBN listings tend to move more quickly if such information is included.

It's unlikely that PBS will change the info unless there is no on WL, no copies in the system and you can prove that it never exited as the book currently listed in the system.

It's easy to post without an ISBN and as Jimi says the more info you put in the better.

I found a book listing that was incorrect in the database, right title - incorrect author IIRC.  When reported, the PBS correction team verified the error and changed it very quickly (thank you!)

Denise, changing an incorrect author or title is easy, however I believe the entire database more or less hinges on the ISBN numbers and so making changes regarding such issues are a bit more difficult.  There is also a question of whether or not the ISBN actually belongs to the title listed in the database at the moment, in which case changing the information to an older title would create similar problems, but most likely with an increased frequency.  It's easier to post a few copies of the older title without ISBNs than it would be to insist that all copies of the newer title be treated as such.  As far as I can know, any time an issue like this arises PBS recommends simply posting the book without an ISBN.  To be honest, I've never minded having to do that, as each listing is unique and therefore, whereas there might be other such copies in the system, the book you post is the one and only in line and stands just as much chance of being requested as any of the others (rather than waiting for one's turn in the FIFO line).  Every book I had ever posted in this manner was actually requested quite quickly, so it's quite a fortunate problem to run into!

Ok I went to amazon plug in the ISBN and my title came up.  I typed in the title of the other book to bring it up on amazon but I can't find where it shows the ISBN# that way.  So now what?

So now what?

If you want to post this right away and have it on your bookshelf, available for ordering now, then you should use the Post a Book Without an ISBN screen.

If you are willing to wait a while to see if it can be fixed, you can submit an edit by clicking on the More button on the book details page for this ISBN and then choosing Edit Book Data. The book data team will investigate and they may be able to change the title. If they can, the new title will eventually appear on the listing. If the title cannot be changed because other people have already posted the other book that shares that ISBN, then you will still have to use the Post a Book Without an ISBN screen.

Thanks Cathy,

I'll try your fix it plan.  That way if it is an error it can be corrected.

You will stand the best chance of getting the change made, if you first make the extra effort to search the other majoy Internet databases to make sure that the ISBN in hand, only comes up in an extremely small percentage of times with the name listed on PBS (actually preferably not at all, but that's usually asking for too much, so we ask that it only be a random here or there listing) Go to the following topic and pick the databases listed there for your ISBN before sending it to one of the Team members or sending it in yourself. Want to help with Data & Images? Find help here

Click the link in the first few lines that says it will take you down the page to the post on data edting guidelines. Specifically it says: "Below, on this page, I have addressed data editing and questions" Once down the page, you will find: SUGGESTIONS FOR FINDING DATA INFO ON THE INTERNET below that are sites that contain the majority of the databases used on the Internet. These are the sites you should check to see if you book shows up with the ISBN or the other title. It won't guarantee your change, but it will help your case, if you do this, and send your findings to the Data Team member you prefer to work with, and also, let them know if there are any wishers or copies posted. If there is more than one copy posted, dont be holding your breath for a chnge, also, if you find more than just a random here or there single or two case of the ISBN showing up with the other title, again, don't get too  hopeful (especially if there are posted copies or WL'ers).

I hope this helps some of you decide if you actually stand a chance of getting a change approved, or if you can find out before even asking that it's just not likely to happen. Please let me know personally, or here in this topic if you have any questions on any thing I've discussed here.
