Hello.  I am fairly new to PBS.  I am trying to post a Book Club Edition of A Sensible Arrangement by Tracie Peterson.  The book is Wish Listed by quite a few people, so I would like to pass it on.  When I type in the ISBN, which is, 978-1-61129-258-9, it brings up a totally different book.    Please advise.

Thanks!  I love this site.

You need to contact the Book Data Edit Group.  Sometimes, ISBN's can be issued twice or issued, not used, and reissued to a different book.

There are several things you can do.

1 - use the Contact Us feature below and direct you message to the Librarian and explain the problem.  Because of the duplicate ISBN, it might not be fixable.

2 - go to the Genre Forum that your book would fall into and offer it there, explaining it is the HC BookClub edition and there is a glitch in the ISBN.  Ask for a credit and offer to post it to the standard HC ISBN with the understanding it is actually the BC edition.  THIS IS A RULE VIOLATION, so I would avoid that and ask for a credit transfer from whoever wants the book

3 - PBS has a way to post a book not in the system.  See this information under Ask The Librarian

Problem: the ISBN brings up a Listing Preview showing a totally different book than the one you have:

Explanation: This can happen if there is a database error (see above) OR when publishers assign the same ISBN to more than one title.

On PBS, only one book listing can be attached to each ISBN. The one you are seeing on the listing preview is the one attached to that ISBN at PBS.

Solutions:

  • If you believe there is a database error, you can submit a correction to the Data Correction volunteers using the Edit Book Data link in the "More Options" menu on the Book Details page.  After you have done that, if the change can be made it will be made (this can take a variable amount of time), and after the change is made you can use the listing to post your book.  In other words, you must not use the listing until it matches the book you have. If you don't want to wait for the correction to be made (it may be rejected if it is not a database error), you can post your book using the Post Books without an ISBN link on the Post Books page to create a non-ISBN listing that matches the book you have.
  • If the ISBN was used for different books and your book does not match the listing for that ISBN in our system, you will need to post this book with a customized listing for the book, using the Post Books without an ISBN link on the Post Books page.

You would then have to post the book as if there was no ISBN - BUT it would have no wishers and no one would know about it being there unless you went to the Genre forum anyway!

And at that point, I'd just throw in the towel and forget it.

Get help by asking in the Live Help section (June is very helpful as are several others), but to be honest, I'd go the Love & Romance and basically offer the book there with exactly the info you posted here.

This is a tough problem.  Good Luck - but remember KISS - and just go to the genre forum and hope someone wants the book.

Thank you reacherfan1909.  I will contact PBS and let them know about the problem, but I will probably wind up posting it in the genre section with the credit transfer.  If nobody takes it, then I will donate it to the public library.  I really wanted it to go to the next person on the wish list, but things don't always work out.

Thanks again for your prompt and efficient response.

What I recommend is to post it with a short ISBN, then add a tag to the main listing to refer folks to the short number.

"You would then have to post the book as if there was no ISBN - BUT it would have no wishers and no one would know about it being there unless you went to the Genre forum anyway!"

This isn't quite accurate.  There really are a lot of members that 'shop' the books posted every day.  So posting as a book without an ISBN can work well.

Thank you Emily E. and Anna B.  I will try to list it without the ISBN first and if there are no takers I will try the genre section.

I don't know how other people use the site, but I usually do a title search, so maybe that will work for someone else too.  I would pm the requestor to inform them it is a Book Club Edition, because I noticed in RC's that some swappers specify "No Book Club Editions."  I don't want someone to be disappointed.

No. Please don't PM the requestor about it being a BCE. You can tag the listing that it is a book club edition. You can even list it in the description. But, frankly, if it matters to the requestor, then they should already have an RC about it.

Some folks have no idea of the difference.

Plus this puts you in a position of having to decide to cancel or not if you do not hear back from the member.

Thanks for that advice Emily.  I posted the book with a short ISBN and created a tag on the hardcover edition stating "Book Club Edition posted under ISBN 464185.  This is a learning experience.

That looks like a good solution, Renee.  Just remember to remove your tag from the HB listing once the book is gone!  :^)

Thank you Anna B.  I didn't know that I was supposed to remove it, but as soon as it's gone, I will go in and do so.
