There is probably a very obvious answer to this, but I am not seeing it.  I am trying to post a paperback book, and the ISBN listed first in the book brings up the hardcover version.  There are two more ISBNs listed lower on the page in the book, in smaller type, and neither matches the ISBN that comes up on PBS for the paperback version of the book.

What am I doing wrong?  I'm afraid of posting it under the wrong ISBN.

You can post it as a book without an ISBN.  It's another option on the "post books" page.

Can you clarify what you mean when you say "the ISBN listed first in the book brings up the hardcover version"? Do you mean that there are multiple ISBNs on the copyright page? Do any of them match the ISBN on the back cover (with the bar code)?

Searching by title is usually not the best way to go when listing books. It often doesn't bring up all of the versions that are in the system. I suggest searching by the ISBN on the back cover and have the search set to "All Books". If the system has a matching ISBN, check to see if it is the same as yours (title, author, binding type, etc.). If it doesn't match your copy in this regard, then you will have to list it under a PBS-generated "no-ISBN" number. If the ISBN isn't in the system at all, then you need to add it to the system and fill in the details for your copy.

Did that make sense? I'm not sure I answered your question.

I did not search by title- I only post books by putting in the ISBN.  The copyright page (as well as the back cover above the bar code) lists three ISBNs.  Sometimes books will say (hdbk) or (pbk) next to the numbers, but this one does not.  I didn't realize that the first one was for the hardcover, and when I put it in, I got the little screen saying "Is this your book" with other options to select below- two other ISBNs for paperback versions.  Neither of the ISBNs listed on PBS for paperback versions match the ISBNs listed in/on the book.  It seems it's not in the PBS system with the ISBN that I have with the barcode or with the other paperback ISBN listed on the copyright page... but it has two other paperback ISBNs in the system.  I think that's what threw me.

I didn't realize that you can post without the ISBN, so thank you to both of you!  I will add it in.

Sounds like you have one where the publisher reused the ISBN. Since PBS lists by binding, the first one into the system gets the ISBN and any others need to be posted as a book without an ISBN. You can Tag the ISBN with something like " PB version with this ISBN posted under XXXXX" so that people looking for it can find yours.

One thing you want to confirm when you have a paperback showing in the system as a HC is that the book is not a ARC since those are usually pb books bearing the HCs ISBN. Glance over the the cover and make sure it does not say Advanced Readers Copy or Uncorrected Proof or Not For Resale anywhere on it since ARCs are not postable into the system.

You can also try searching again for the other two ISBNs.  Sometimes when the system doesn't have an ISBN in the catalog, if you search for it the system will import it (from Amazon.com I assume) and if you search for it again a bit later it will now show up.

The other ISBNs listed in smaller type are likely for other editions of that book, so don't use them to post the book under.  If there's no ISBN on the back cover with the barcode (or sometimes on the book's spine), the one in larger print on the back of the title page is your official ISBN.

Melanie's advice on naughty ISBN-recycling publishers and ARCs is excellent, so I won't repeat it :-)

Cheers,
