How can I put a book on my WL that is older and has no ISBN ? When I put in the title or author the title does not show up as an option.

No. At least not in a manner that would produce any results. The only way it could be listed is with a PBS short ISBN and those aren't supposed to be wished for because the aren't supposed to be reused for anything but the original copy that it was generated for.

You could try asking in the Book Bazaar to see if anyone has it or put it in your siggy line that you are searching for it. Since it can't be wished for, you wouldn't be running into the no asking for a wish list book rule.

Thanks for the quick answer Melanie. I guess this particular book has never been posted here.

A lot of people wish for those no ISBN  books anyway.  Maybe hoping someone will have one it post it that 5 digit ISBN already in the system. But that's against the rules although I'm sure people do it anyway.

I've wishlisted short ISBN's for vintage books.  Don't remember if I've actually received one tho!  But it can be a good reminder to check occassionally to see if the book has been posted under a different short ISBN.

I was under the impression that you could relist a book under the no-ISBN book if that was the number assigned to it when it was originally listed. I have gotten no-ISBN books and then relisted it under that number because it was specifically associated with that book. I have looked it up in the past and that was my understanding after reading the rules regarding no-ISBN listings. Correct me if I am wrong!

YOu are right Sally but the chances of being done that way are slim.

I would put them on my reminder list and then keep searching for them. Unless you have a lot of WL space-having them WL might prompt someone to post them. But you wouldn't get a "similar to WL" email about them when they're posted with a new PBS ISBN.

Oh I do sporadically search for my most wished for books by author and by title, and I have found 1 book that way, to catch those non-ISBN books

I still don't understand why the "short ISBN" books stay in the system (e.g., 86291) after they have been ordered.  If we're not supposed to re-use the numbers, why not delete them?  This would result in searches returning fewer useless hits, and that would be a nice thing.
