I have two older Agatha Cristie paperbacks that have ISBNs, but when I put the ISBN  into the PBS system it comes back that no books are found.  Is there a way to add a book with the ISBN?

Thanks,

Tory

Sometimes just putting the ISBN into the search will 'trigger' the system to find the books from the source database. Do the ISBNs come up correctly when you google them? If so, they're out there and PBS should be able update.  You might try again after a little while and see if they populate. Can you give us the IBSNs and if you can't find them maybe one of our great members sleuths here can track them down.

You may have to post without an ISBN. From the help pages ( sorry this is not formatted very well as I cannot format in safari on my iPad):

When your book has no ISBN When your book has an ISBN, but the ISBN is unknown to the PBS database (has not yet been added by regular updates) When your book has an ISBN, but when you type it in on the Post Books page, that ISBN "brings up" another booktype in the database Such as the paperback if you have the hardcover, and vice versa Such as Large Print when you have the regular-font version This happens when the publisher assigns the same ISBN to multiple booktypes. If your book does not match the listing information (title, author, booktype) in the database for the ISBN on the book, it must be Posted without an ISBN To post your book without an ISBN: First, make sure to look over your book really well Sometimes ISBN numbers can be found in unexpected places like the spine The back of the book and in the publishing information in the front of the book are the most common places to find an ISBN. If your book has no ISBN (or the ISBN you have doesn't work in the system): Go to the Post Books page From My Account: click the Post Books tab From anywhere on the site: place your cursor over My Account on the toolbar at the top of the site and click Post Books in the menu that drops down. From your Bookshelf, click the link "Post Books" at the top of the page, in the yellow bar. On the Post Books page: Click the "Post a Book without an ISBN" link at the top of the page, in the yellow bar. Enter the information about the book in the form that comes up: Mandatory information includes: title, author, book dimensions, Subject (genre), booktype Optional information includes: Large Print, Homeschool, Publisher, # pages, Back cover Description (synopsis of the book content), Book Cover image. Your Book Cover Image needs to be less than 5 MB in size, and in .jpg format. When you are done, your book will be listed in the database with a customized listing that has a "short ISBN" or "PBS ISBN", which is the 5 or 6 digit number that PBS assigns in place of the ISBN to keep track of the book in the system.

When I have had that occur, I went to Amazon.com via PBS.  I clicked on the Amazon symbol under the search bar.  Then I would look up the book and read what it has about it.  Once I went back to PBS, I have seen that the ISBN has been added by my visit.  It works for me, but not all the time depending on the book.  You can try and see.

I accidentally put an ISBN in with the "hyphens" and it said nothing found, but when I took them out it worked fine.

Also, if you have to make a new entry without ISBN field, put the ISBN at the begining or end of description or ISBN only if you choose not to do a description.

Yes you can add the book to the system by ISBN, please don't add it as a book without an ISBN if it has one and that one is not being used in the system.

Go to Post Books and enter the ISBN. If it is a valid ISBN but not in the system, when you click check and the system doesn't find it it should proceed to a page where you can enter all of the information about the book. The system will then set up the book listing it by its ISBN.

Melanie:

I tried the steps you wrote to add a book with an ISBN that is not in the database and nothing happened. I went to Post Books, entered the ISBN and hit CHECK. Nothing happened.  Tried several times. I now have 10 older paperbacks that HAVE ISBNs that are not in the system at all that I can't post.  Very frustrated. I do not want to post them with out an ISBN.  Now what???

I had two or three like that and I added a 0 to the isbn and it came out fine.  Have you looked at Amazon.com ?

Your ISBN must be 10 or 13 characters.

If you try adding a zero, add it at the beginning!

I've listed older books with ISBNs ... it's true that some of those very first ISBNs are not 10 digit, but if you add the zero to the beginning that should get you the right one.

If the "ISBN" has less numbers than 9, it's not an ISBN.

Melanie - Tory is right, that doesn't always work.  I have 2 copies of "Animal ER" and one copy is not recognized by PBS.   (ISBN: 0965076427)

I put it on the Post page and hit check and nothing happens - no forward to a page where I can post it and put in the ISBN data.  I have had it work in the past, but whatever triggers that response, doesn't always happen.

I did end up putting it in the system with the short ISBN the system generates, but then took it off my shelf when I found a stain that would make it unpostable (it's now listed in my sig as an unpostable freebie).  But I would have liked to know how to get the book posted with it's own ISBN instead.

I went to Amazon and World Catalog and both of those didn't recognize the ISBN either.

Ann Marie, is that the ISBN as it is printed on the book or did you add the 0 to get it to a 10 digit ISBN? Did you check the book over to see if there is another ISBN printed anywhere? I can't find any system to recognize that as a valid ISBN. It will only work if the system recognizes it as a valid ISBN.

That is the number printed on the back cover of the book - I didn't add the zero.

The copyright page shows a different number -  ISBN: 0525945075  which is a hard cover version - but this book is a paperback.    And the book isn't an ARC.

I have another paperback edition with a different ISBN which the system recognizes.

It's not a big deal ... I was just pointing out that you can have a book with an ISBN that won't promt the system to go to the page where you can use it to post the book with that number.

sometimes the ISBNs on the inside front cover and/or copyright page are slightly different or written in a more easily understandable way and will work when the ones on the back don't.
