Santa Marta: Caribbean island, tropical paradise, Crown Colony on its way to Dominion status and ultimately self-government. But, what path will get it there safely? Or, is it ripe for yet another revolution of rising expectations? Waugh paints for us a panorama of unrest that spread throughout the British Empire. There is something for everyone in this book: politics, intrigue, racial strife, meddling by the fourth estate, even some romance. Oh yes, lets not forget violence and murder. The local police chief is apparently patterned after Dostoyevskys detective in Crime and Punishment and followed later by TVs Columbo. Much of the narrative involves the cat and mouse games played by politicians, reporters, and police. Unfortunately, Waughs works are all but out of print and forgotten.
