Microsoft released an informational security advisory this week, about a vulnerability in Windows software. The vulnerability could allow malware to enter your system and take control of it. Updating the Windows Microsoft Malware Protection Engine to version 1.1.9506.0. (or higher) will fix this vulnerability.

Microsoft is recommending that all Windows users do the following:

(1) Check to see if the update has already been done for your system ~~go here for more details~~

For Windows 8:

  • Open the malware protection program that you are using. For example, to open Windows Defender in Windows 8, press the Windows key to open the Start screen, and then type Windows Defender. Click the Windows Defender icon.
  • Click the Update tab.
  • Click Help, and then click About.
  • Note the Engine Version number. The update was successfully installed if the Malware Protection Engine version number or if the signature package version number matches or exceeds the version 1.1.9506.0.

For Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Click Help, and then click About Windows Defender.
  • Note the Engine Version number. The update was successfully installed if the Malware Protection Engine version number or if the signature package version number matches or exceeds version 1.1.9506.0.

Note: If your Windows is set to auto-update, then you should already be up to date.

(2) Update your system software if that has not already been done

  • To do that, go to your Windows Update app (type "windows update" into your Windows search box (not your browser))
  • When the app opens, click "Check for Update" and if there is an available update, click to update.

Note: To us, it seems easier to go straight to step 2 and update, if there's an available update.

This is important to do, to keep your system safe. We recommend that all Windows users update immediately, and we also recommend setting your Windows Update to auto-update if you haven't done that, so that security is optimized at all times.
