I've been a member at Goodreads for over a year now and really love it.  Well this past week they really secured my trust and I'll be a member for a very long time.

About 4 months ago I posted a negative review about a book I read.  Quite simply it was horrible and I said so.  We all have different  opinions and like different things.  I've said those same things here as have all of you.  Well, in the past 3 days, I have received 10 harassing comments about this review - a few of them quite ugly.  I get enough drama at work (I'm a 911 operator) so I just deleted them instead of fanning the flames.   But I also emailed Goodreads and just let them know and asked them what I could do if it happened in the future.  They emailed me back today and said they had looked into it and took things like this very seriously.  They were able to retrieve the deleted comments and upon reading them, they deleted those member accounts for harassment!    I didn't expect that at all but I'm glad that they took my complaint seriously.  I would never dream of harassing someone over a negative review - I can only imagine it must have been some coordinated effort by the author or someone who knows her.

OK now I'm curious to know the book.

Heh, me too! But that's awesome! I hate those pile-ons, where the fangrrls gather to harrass someone who doesn't worship at their alter. (Though they are frequently unintentionally funny, in their utter cluelessness.)

Through the Fire by Beth Trissel.  http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6534055-through-the-fire

"everyone" else liked it but hey - I'm not everyone.  I know a lot of people who love Nora Roberts, but I know some who don't either.  Its just sad people can't respect other's opinions.

SHERRI - You're only entitled to my opinion! ;)

I liked goodreads too and was on their site religiously for awhile. But I found I was spending more time writing about books and adding info to their website (synopses, etc.) than I was reading. :-(  When I decided to cut back, I eliminated the A'zon romance forum and goodreads from my daily routine, keeping fictiondb.com and paperbackswap (of course).

I wrote to them suggesting they offer a version of their database tools to schools for kids to use (in a closed environment) but they replied that they were too busy trying to build the site for adults. *sigh*

Jeez - I went over and looked and there's still a comment that's barely about the book, just badmouthing you for your opinion. WTF? That is so incredibly inappropriate and offensive.  I think I will sign up just so I can vote that I like your review. (Which I hope you put back in its entirety.)

Well, I tried, but I can't sign up because it won't let me past the (supposedly optional) yahoo address book page.

I saw some nincompoop bleating about sticking to bodice rippers.  Sheesh.  Sounds like another flying monkey squad to me.

Good for them for taking care of the harassers!  No one deserves to be harassed for their opinion.  If other people read the book and found it the best thing they've ever read, they should spend their time writing a positive review about it, not jumping on someone for expressing their opinion.

There is no one book out there that everyone loves.  Something I think is fabulous someone else might find really bad.  Those differences make the world a much more interesting place!

No one deserves to be harassed for their opinion.

Exactly!  I would never dream of doing that to someone.  I know alot of people who either love or hate Nora Roberts, Diana  Palmer, SEP....the list goes on and on.  Someone even said I obviously didn't read romance much.  Um, excuse me?  I have over 1000 books on my read list and 98% of them are romance!    But to satisfy those that wanted the original review:  I said it was in the top 5 of worst books I'd ever read.  The characters were wooden and didn't have any chemistry. The heroine was TSTL and the book as a whole was a wallbanger.  BUT, I did say that I respected anyone who has the guts to put out a book and maybe this was just her first novel or her first bad novel.  Apparently that wasn't enough.

And Willa - I use gmail for my address.  Maybe its a yahoo thing?

Wow. I'm also impressed with Goodreads response. I just love goodreads, I've been using them for over a year and the website has been super-useful. I'm glad they also seem to be so on top of things.

I can't believe you were ganged up on because you didn't like an author's book! It definitely sounds like a flying monkey squad to me too.

Well, just so ya know... I gave the pot a good stir this morning.  I commented to Beth Trissel, for having the monumental bad taste to come along & post thank yous to these two dimwits - and I wasn't my usual sweet & angelic self either:P  Then I turned around a forwarded it on to Jane at Dear Author.  I'm so bad...

lol Kim!

OMG I read that one "review" that commented on Sherri's review challenging Sherri's "knowledge" like we all have to professional romance rviewers before we have the right to an opinion on goodreads...sheesh. Book reviews on goodreads are supposed to be for books, not other's reviews of books.

ETA: I flagged that person's review :P

Well goodreads continues to baffle me. Aparently I *did* manage to sign up, but when I tried to flag that "review" it told me they couldn't find that review... which is clearly still there. Oh well, I did all the voting it would let me do. Now I need to find all my pbs friends over there. :-)

I got the same message, Willa & couldn't flag it either.  It needs to be removed.  It's not even a book review really, it's basically just a rant.

Beth Tissel commented a few more times & she was actually pretty nice.  My only problem with her was that she was thanking people for support in what weren't actually reviews, but rants about Sherri.  Bad form, IMO, and not something a writer should be thanking people for.  They want to thank for positive reviews, great, but don't pat someone on the back for being asinine - even if they're "defending your honor" in the process.  Nobody needs that kind of support, and thanking someone for it is nothing short of condoning AND enabling.  I wouldn't do it - too many blogs out there these days who would just love to bust you for it:P

well I can't find anything :/ I just don't get w hat the problem is with a negative review..to me a good review states if you liked a book or not and most importantly why you liked or disliked along with some additional info like 'nothing but nookie' or 'not enough nookie',etc stuff to help you decide. I've liked a lot of books that someone over at RT or here has said they read and hated and I've read plenty that were 'highly recommended' and thought they weren't all that and a donut. just scary not to be able to post anything. I know Lori Foster hangs out on RT a lot and she was up in arms over that last fighter book..makes a person afraid to post anything sometimes.

Lemme try to post a link to the actual review I'm talking about:  http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/73751531

See if that works.  If not, scroll down on the book's page until you get to Mary Ricksen's review.  It's the second one from the top.  The comments icon says there are 2 comments, but it's actually about 8 now.  That may be why Goodreads says the can't find the review when you try to flag it & the comment count isn't going up.  They've probably done something to disable it from showing up on the updates list when you log in.

The author was thanking people for bashing someone else's opinion of the book?  Now that's just wrong.

A friend of mine wrote a book.  She got a little upset one day because someone had posted a negative review of her book.  You know what she asked her friends to do?  Asked us to please post a review of her book if we'd read it.  That's it.  Didn't want anyone to bash the negative review, didn't want anyone to say it was the best thing they'd ever read.  Just post your honest opinion so that there were some more reveiws out there.

WTG, Kim! I loved your comments.  It's kind of sad that we can't have an opinion anymore and must all like the same thing.

Well, since she was gracious about taking the criticism, I decided to try her book & put it on my WL.  If I end up not liking it either however, I'm not going to be shy or mince words about it, and I will post my review at Goodreads.
