I just love this series. I am so glad that she went into more depth about Jeffery and Sara and the beginning of it all. It definately sheds some light on the other books. I would recommend this book to anyone, but I think you need to read it in order

This book is the fourth of the Grant County series, and I really feel they should be read in order. This one is different from the others, however, in that the story is split between a time early in Sara and Jeffrey's relationship and the present. A pair of young armed gunmen take over the police station, killing or injuring most of the officers. Were they looking for Jeffrey, and if so why? The characterizations remain true and the story riveting. I've enjoyed all four Grant County stories by Slaughter.

Wow, this kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Very well-written; the suspense doesn't stop, but you can't put it down because you just have to know what's going to happen next. The ending didn't feel rushed, as some books can.

It has long since been astablished that Jeffrey and Sara's relationship is haunted by ghosts from the past. Before, it was Sara's past that was causing a variety of troubles, but in the fourth Grant County instalment, we see that Jeffrey has his fair share as well.

The book begins with a hostage situation at Jeffrey's office. Some gunmen have come in and have left many dead, with Sara terrified and Jeffrey badly wounded. Lena is on the team, but she is hiding her own secrets. Having just returned to the police force, she fears she is pregnant by her abusive boyfriend. This takes a backseat as the story unfolds to that of Jeffrey and Sara's past.

When they are first dating, Jeffrey takes Sara to his hometown to meet his friends and family. Sara sees his family for the first time, realizing that Jeffrey came from a family and friend circle of bitter, angry people. Soon an accidental murder occurs, and Jeffrey seems to have altered some things at the scene to clear his childhood friend of suspision. Why? Why would Jeffrey, himself a policeman, do something so terrible as to obstruct justice? And the twists and turns are very surprising if not tragic. Fueling the horrible tragedy that their future marriage would bring about (partly because Sara could not have children because of her brutal rape years ago), it is discovered that Jeffrey had fathered a child with a woman from his high school years and was never told. We all have such dirty little secrets, things hidden away. But, no matter how much families and friends try to hide their mistakes, short comings, and trying to make everything look "right and respectable" despite their shame, the truth somehow comes out. It always does. Even the most adept liars can't go on forever living their lies. And lies, as we all know, aren't worth anything.
