I'm confused about there being 2 volumes. Each volume has a review that says you need both volumes, as the 2nd complements the first. But when I read the descriptions of each, they sound like the same book.

Anyone know the scoop? I don't want to order both if one is unnecessary.

It took me some time to figure this out, but here's the scoop:

Vol. 1 covers all six books of the Lymond Chronicles and the first five books in the House of Niccolo series. Vol 2 covers the rest of the Niccolo series.  According to Wikipedia, vol. 2 "also contains a bibliography of many of the hundreds of primary and secondary sources Dunnett used in her historical research. Dunnett contributed much more to the second volume than the first, directly authoring many of the entries."

Thanks, Deb, that's very helpful! I think I'll grab the 2nd volume, then, and I can decide later if I want to add the first as well.
