A bespectaled and paunchy literary type gets you in touch with your hairy man to honor the feminine and release your inner warrior by showing the sword a bit. "Seminal" in every sense. This is the now-classic that helped propel Men's Studies and can be blamed for too many men's drumming circles.

I only started reading this book. I was unable to finish it, even though it was very insightful and heady. This is a book that would interest a man in his search for identity. I thought that I would be interested in such a text as well, but I think that as a woman, I just wasn't the target audience.

Robert Bly is a great writer and poet. His thoughts are well expressed and his insights are valuable. This is especially valuable to young men seeking a path through life that is both strong and inclusive.

Iron John read like someone's master's thesis to me. I think the author really dragged out the tale with too many details drawing away our attention instead of just taking a fascinating folk tale and just telling it with some contemporary analysis based on his varied experiences with it. It kind of set out a disclaimer right away that it was not a book intended for women (thanks) but for men to help themselves, as it is too often, in the author's opinion, that women would participate in these types of male centered books, lectures, and retreats. Oh well, it's a good book that many will enjoy I'm sure, I'm just not one of them.
