I have a book that has an ISBN.....but it isn't in the system here.  Do I post it as a book without an ISBN?

It is The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye by A.S. Byatt  ISBN 0965035799

Thanks!

hi kristen!

typically, to add a book into the system, you can go to your TBP pile, and add the ISBN there.  then, you'll be able to find the book to post it to your bookshelf.  be sure to edit book data with the summary from the back to make the book more appealing to others.  :)

If you try to list it via ISBN and the ISBN is actually not at all in the system, the site will ask you to fill in the information. It's basically the same form as no ISBN, except it has an ISBN slot at the top.

I haven't figured out if this adds an ISBN to the system or not.  It didn't at one point, and I quit bothering to list those then--if it wasn't improving the DB it wasn't worth my time.  Maybe that's been fixed, I haven't tested it in over a year.

Kristen--

I'm not finding that ISBN anywhere -- not in Google, not on Amazon, not in WorldCat, not anywhere.  If it has a 13 digit ISBN too, you might try that as well.  Otherwise, you might double check the book to be sure you've actually got the ISBN and not a Library of Congress number or some other digits.

I mean no offense here; it is just really unusual for a book that recent (looks like it was published in the 90s) to have an ISBN that doesn't show up somewhere online.

Cheers,

Catt

No offense taken, but it's definitely an ISBN number.....it's above  the barcode on the back of the book and it says ISBN.

when I googled it, the only reference I found to this ISBN was here:

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?THDJNNNTHN0000

I couldn't figure how to add it in the system with this ISBN, so I posted it as a book without an ISBN.

thanks everyone for the help :)

That link with the ISBN says "bad checksum" -- the checksum is the last digit of the ISBN which is formed through adding up the other numbers and coming up with the checksum digit.  It allows computerized systems to tell if a number in an ISBN has been typo'ed, etc., so it means the ISBN in this case is not in the proper form -- some number is off.

It also says the copyright page has a different ISBN -- does yours? Did you try that one?

Catt

The one on the copyright page is for the hardcover version.....I checked :)  (I've seen books that had ISBNs for other bindings on the copyright page and assumed that's what this was)

Does that mean that there was a mistake in the printing?

Seems pretty bizarre.

Yes, it wouldn't be unheard of for someone to misprint the ISBN ... that's supposedly why the checksum is there, but apparently someone goofed :-)  You could contact the publisher directly for clarification.

Check the inside of the cover where all the info is about the publishing info...I had a couple older books that had a listed number on the inside of the book.  Just something to maybe check.

I also had  a situation where the ISBN wasn't in the system, but it was a UK published book so I thought that maybe PBS didn't get ISBNs from the UK.  I decided that posting without an ISBN was too time consuming and just donated the book to the library.
