How many young Americans know of the special relationship between the US and the Philippines, the islands that we took from Spain and held almost 50 years before acknowledging our own values of self-determination and letting them go to govern themselves? One set of islands in the Pacific became a state, another set of islands is an independent country whose people have a special attachment to the US (mostly positive). I recommend this book.
