Those are separate items within Raok which have permission to be listed in their own thread (some of them were previously in other forums which are now defunct).  Your list of things to give away has a specific thread identified to be used and the Raok rules state such.

It's detracting going through all the coupon offerings.  I've asked this before but why not have a separate thread for coupons wanted and to be given.  I now spend more time on the items wanted than on those given.  Some of you share cancelled stamps and postcards with me and I love those offerings.  A friend uses the cancelled stamps for charity and I use the postcards for notes.

I posted a new thread about Michelle a year back or so too but I didnt get permission and no one said a thing. I didnt know you had to have permission to post a thread in a forum? I thought thats what a forum was for. Ill go read the PBS rules on forum threads, starting threads. OK

the rules for PBS are:

"These Discussion Forums are provided to allow you to exchange thoughts, ideas and opinions on topics that are of interest to you. Please try to keep in mind that although this is a family-oriented website, membership is restricted to those 18 and over, and some mature content and conversation is to be expected. The forums are not intended for viewing by underage children. While we do not permit what is (in our judgment) vulgarity, overt rudeness or anything obscene, we do realize that our membership is adult and will sometimes use the vocabulary of adults. Also, please do not use the discussion board to bash PaperBackSwap.com or to promote other commercial websites. This is a friendly site! Let's keep it that way".

Your rules Jeanne in the RAOK say to put the Raok in the Raok. Unless Im mistaken and there is some other PBS rule I am missing, please post word for word the PBS rules and where to find them.

Hey everybody.  This is not the usual discussion that I am used to seeing here, so can we take a breath and PAUSE, please?  I would like to make a few comments about RAOK, which will be longer than usual.

The general conventions for the RAOK forum are the same as elsewhere:  you do not need permission to start a new thread, so long as you are courteous and respectful, use common sense, and understand what the forum is all about.  In general here and elsewhere on PBS, you are not allowed to solicit any type of donation or advertise items for sale (even if on an outside website).  In addition, if you want to make special offers regarding books or media that you wish to trade, or to buy, sell, or give away credits, then you should post in the Book Bazaar and not here, because you would be duplicating the primary purpose of PBS rather than adding anything specific to RAOK.  That said, offers in the RAOK thread to give away a book from your bookshelf are definitely a grey area, since those offers also commonly appear in the Book Bazaar.  However, I appreciate that when they are posted here, they usually seem to be more from a spirit of "I want to make someone happy" rather than "I want to get all these books out of my house", which strikes me as in keeping with the idea behind this forum.

Now, with regard to things that pertain to the RAOK forum specifically.  There are special-topic threads running in the forum that do not overlap with the recurring monthly threads.  This is fine; they are the type of things that keep people coming back to the forum and - maybe - also participating in the recurring threads.  The Pay It Forward thread is one of the most successful RAOK efforts I can remember, and Darlene is a great hostess who puts in a significant amount of time to keep it going.  It is different from the RAOK thread because it involves contingent giving, so there is really no comparison.  Likewise, the Sticker Train threads involve a commitment to giving something specific.  There are people who want to frequently trade (and chat about!) stickers only, so this thread makes sense, since it works very differently than the RAOK thread.  People who only have a few stickers to offer now and then still post in RAOK, which is fine.  The Train is more work to organize than it may appear, and I would like to also give Mona a shout-out for being a caring hostess.  A Card Exchange is also completely different from an offer of items you no longer want, so doesn't overlap with the RAOK thread.  If anyone wants to start a Valentine card exchange, that would be a lot of fun, so go for it!

But let's talk about those items you have, but no longer need or want.  As Jeanne explained, since there is a designated thread in which to offer miscellaneous items that you would like to give away, we ask that you use the RAOK thread for them, rather than starting a new one just for your things.  There are a couple of reasons for this that have been explained before, but perhaps it would be useful to post them again.
First and foremost, that is where regular users look for those offers.  Many of us (including people who do not otherwise post in RAOK, and who you may never have heard of or seen here) use the Watch function to see only those threads, and don't come to the main forum regularly.  You will have more eyes on your offer, and therefore get a better response, if you use the designated thread.  If I have PMed a (usually new-to-the-forum) poster and requested him/her to move an offer, this is the primary reason.  I want people who are generous and make non-contingent offers (which means all of you regulars too!) to have the best response possible, rather than go away frustrated by the lack of response.
Second, and tangential to that, it keeps the forum organized.  This is partly historical, since before PBS moved to paid memberships, there were many more people who came to RAOK for the social contact and because they were motivated by generosity and the desire to share, and not because PBS is a place to swap and discuss books.  Many of them could not or preferred not to pay for a membership in order to chat, and so are not here any more.  But back then, RAOK would get to resemble the Bazaar when participants were each starting their own thread.  The monthly recurring threads were extremely helpful at cutting through the chaos.  We have kept that structure because it works - and, at least speaking personally here, in hopes that the visitor rate to RAOK would go back up.

With regard to Coupons specifically.  In recent times, there hasn't been a large enough base to support a designated coupon thread.  It has been tried and it did not do well (similar to the designated Birthday thread) because despite a lot of people saying they wanted it, there just wasn't much participation.  I agree that if there is enough interest, then having coupons in their own thread makes sense.  Is there someone who would like to get that started and see how it goes?

The point of RAOK is to share, to be kind, and to raise the happiness level of all of us.  That is what Jeanne and I now, and Irene and Pat before us, have always tried to promote.  If you feel we're not succeeding, then kindly PM us privately, because we believe in RAOK and want you to enjoy being here.  We are always ready to listen to you.  But calling us (or other people who provide RAOK thread management) out or arguing in a public post is not particularly kind, does not create happiness, and is really not the type of sharing that this forum is intended for.

Thanks to all for the discussion.  Jeanne and Claire please don't be offended because some of us asked questions.  At times thoughts, ideas and opinions needed to be aired and discussed.  If we don't ask we can't figure things out.  As PBS says  "These Discussion Forums are provided to allow you to exchange thoughts, ideas and opinions on topics that are of interest to you.  Please try to keep in mind that although this is a family-oriented website, membership is restricted to those 18 and over, and some mature content and conversation is to be expected..."   I read all of the comments and saw none of them breaching that statement.  Just good discussion.
